What Sonny Leaving the Mob Means for GH

On paper, that’s two characters changing direction. In practice, it’s GH potentially signaling a shift in its storytelling identity. For decades, “Sonny in the mob” hasn’t been a single plot — it’s been one of the show’s organizing assumptions, the premise that quietly determines what kinds of stories get told, which characters get placed in the center of the canvas, and what stakes the writers return to for dramatic juice.

That has been just fine with plenty of fans — and a longtime sore spot for others, who’ve argued for years that mob stories have too often come at the expense of other pockets of the canvas, especially the hospital itself.

The mob’s place in GH’s storytelling didn’t begin with Sonny, who was introduced in 1993. In the 1970s, there was mob boss Frank Smith (George Gaynes) and those on his payroll, including Roy DiLucca (Asher Brauner) and a certain someone by the name Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary). In the 1980s and early 1990s, there was Duke Lavery (Ian Buchanan) and the Jeromes, Victor (Jack Axelrod), Olivia (Tonja Walker) and Julian (Jason Culp).

But Sonny — and Jason, who started working for Sonny in 1996 — certainly defined the modern era of it, the version of the show where organized crime as a plot device wasn’t a sometimes-thing. For decades now, Sonny’s mob life is how GH has most reliably made a threat stick around, made a secret cost something, made a favor turn into leverage, made protection come with a bill, made blowback travel from one corner of the canvas to another. Comas, shootouts, divorces, even entire families — the Alcazars, the Zaccharas — came and went along the way.

Both Sonny and Jason have tried to get out of the mob before, only to find it impossible. But that doesn’t appear to be the story GH is telling this time.

The dual events of this week — Jason’s mafia exit followed so swiftly by Sonny’s — reads as more than the men making a career choice. GH isn’t merely swapping out who runs the Corinthos organization, it’s moving the two characters most associated with operating that world toward the exit at the same time — which forces the show to reveal what it wants to lean on next.

Game On

After Serena (literally) fell into Jack’s lap at the Metro Court pool, she began flirting with him and Jack made a hasty exit. Refocusing on Michael, Serena introduced herself to her target, explaining that she’d come to town to support Lucy, who had been thrown for a loop when Maxie sold Michael her Deception shares. Michael reassured Serena that Maxie knew he’d always act in the best interests of the company and not just tow the Quartermaine family line.

Coyly saying that put her mind at ease, Serena questioned if Michael would have an issue with her working at Deception alongside her mother. As Lucy watched her plan take shape from the other side of the pool, Michael joked to Serena that Tracy was the one to be wary of, and he wanted to hear about it if Tracy gave her any trouble.

Mob Mentality

Jason informed Tracy that he’d quit working for Sonny, of his own accord, wanting to be a better role model for Danny. Touched by his reasoning, Tracy made the observation that what Jason wanted for Danny was what Alan and Monica had wanted for him.

An emotional Jason confided that he wished he could apologize to his parents for what he’d put him through. Tracy assured him that Alan and Monica would be happy about his decision if they were still here. Jason worried that his decision was coming too late, but Tracy smiled that it was never too late to make a change, and if she could do it, so could he.

At Sonny’s house, Sonny told Dante that Jason had decided he wanted out of the business for Danny’s sake, and Dante worried about who would protect Sonny without Jason around. Dante was stunned when his father revealed that he was getting out of the mob, too, and planned to focus on opportunities that opened up after Sidwell’s arrest.

Father and son shared a hug as Dante noted that he never thought he’d see the day his father went legit, and Sonny marveled that they were able to have a conversation where he didn’t have to hold back anything out of fear of compromising Dante’s position with the PCPD.

Trial and Error

As Curtis’s trial continued, Portia claimed her personal life wasn’t relevant to the assault and refused to answer when Martin asked how long she’d been having an affair with Isaiah, but the judge ordered her to comply. When it was Drew’s turn to take the stand, he kept his promise to Curtis and lied under oath about Willow’s whereabouts the night of the accident, causing a major hit to the prosecution’s case.

During Isaiah’s testimony, he got worked up during cross-examination when Martin argued that he’d provoked Curtis with the statement that he’d be a better father to the baby. Regaining his composure, Isaiah shrugged that he’d simply made a statement he believed to be true.

Next, Martin began the defense’s case, calling Jordan to the stand first. She testified that she believed Isaiah had visited her in the hospital because he felt guilty for causing the accident, but Molly undermined her argument by getting her to admit that she and Isaiah were friendly.

When Curtis took the stand, he explained how he believed the facts were proof that Isaiah left him and Jordan for dead, adding that he felt that Isaiah was actively trying to push him out of his family. Molly scored a small victory when she confirmed during cross-examination that Isaiah had made no threats the night of the incident.

In their closing arguments, Molly painted Curtis as someone who took the law into his own hands, while Martin begged the jury not to tear Curtis away from his newborn son simply for trying to stand up for his family.

Threat Assessment

At Bobbie’s, Lucy asked Laura when Kevin would return to Port Charles, hoping that Serena could reunite with him since they’d been so close when Serena was younger. Laura revealed that Kevin was extending his time teaching in Dublin, but she was hoping to bring Ace back with her when she went to visit. As Lucy exited, Laura was concerned when she spotted Ezra chatting with Jacinda outside.

Jacinda asked Ezra to return pills she’d left at his place months earlier, claiming she needed to take the edge off after Willow served her with a restraining order to stay away from Wiley and Amelia. Although he didn’t want to leave her alone in that state, Ezra made Jacinda promise to call if she needed him. Once inside, Ezra sat down at Laura’s table, where she urged him to think twice about spending time with Jacinda, considering the contentious relationship between Michael and Willow. Ezra replied that he wasn’t going to turn his back on a friend who was in over her head.

Later, Jack approached Laura, and the mayor demanded to know why the WSB hadn’t yet taken Jenz Sidwell into federal custody. Jack explained that the arrest fell under the jurisdiction of the local authorities, and the bureau was hesitant to override that in the wake of the incident with Jason. Laura was not happy with that answer, and Jack offered his backup if she had reason to believe Sidwell was still a threat.

Caffeine Jolt

Willow instructed Nina to stop confiding in Jack about her personal life, especially regarding the kids. Nina argued that the PCPD reopening the investigation into Michael involved Jack just as much as it did them since he’d gotten rid of the traffic cam footage. Nina didn’t think there was a reason for Willow to push Michael about the custody agreement and was horrified to learn that Willow had a restraining order against Jacinda.

Their conversation was interrupted when Jacinda arrived on an errand for Nina. While she was alone in the living room, Jacinda slipped one of the tablets into Willow’s iced coffee, enacting her revenge for the restraining order.

Fans Sound Off Over Chris McKenna Leaving GH

“I am heartbroken!!” a viewer named Kelli posted to the comments on the Soap Opera Digest article regarding the actor’s exit. “I love Chris McKenna and have been following his career since he was Joey Buchanan on One Life to Live. I love him on GH and will be very sad to see him leave. I met him in person last weekend at the Montco Chocolate, Coffee and Wine Festival in Pottstown, PA, and he was so kind and friendly with all the fans who waited hours in line to meet him. What a class act and true gentleman. I will miss him.”

McKenna began acting as a tween, playing OLTL’s Joey Buchanan from 1990-93. From 2014-15 he portrayed Mark Harding on The Young and the Restless, and in 2016, he briefly took on the role of Dr. Hayden on The Bold and the Beautiful.

In February 2025, McKenna began airing as the new Jack Brennan on GH, taking over for the departing Charles Mesure. And though recasts can sometimes be challenging for daytime viewers to accept, McKenna soon began amassing a group of loyal supporters.

When McKenna took over the role of Jack, the WSB Director’s relationship with Carly (Laura Wright) was taking off. Their love affair fell apart when she found out he’d recruited her daughter, Josslyn (Eden McCoy), to join the WSB, but Jack’s now begun dating Nina (Cynthia Watros) — a budding romance that would be cut short by his portrayer’s exit.

“I’m just starting to like Jack Brennan because he has chemistry with Nina,” Cathy M Vaughan commented on the article. “They have the it factor… Please don’t kill him off or get rid of Jack. Give them a chance… I’m sure other fans feel the same way… Jack & Nina just starting out as a couple so please give them a chance & see where it takes them…” Replying to her comment, Dale added a very simple: “Agree.”

On X (previously Twitter), fan @DigitalDaisy7 commented on Digest‘s post about McKenna’s exit by declaring, “I certainly hope they change their mind. He is a great actor and this is one of the best new characters to come around in a long time. Plus, he’s great with Nina.”

What Will Happen to Jack on GH?

With reports of McKenna’s exit saying that his character will be killed off, many fans are jumping to the same conclusion. “Willow strikes again?!?!?!?!?!” Donna Chiaradio mused in the comments on Digest‘s official Facebook page. In the same thread, Diane L. Johnson predicted: “I think Willow will kill him and set Michael up for the murder.”

Some are also wondering if Jack’s supposed demise will come with a twist, as was the case with another recent departure: While everyone in Port Charles believes Cassius Faison (Ryan Paevey) to be dead, he’s actually in WSB custody. “Are they really killing him off, or will he be Cassius’ roomie?!” wondered Deborah Regula on Facebook. And Daytona Winchester suggested, “He probably won’t be dead dead, but soap opera ‘dead’ lol so they can bring him back.”

Others wondered what Jack’s departure means for WSB operations in Port Charles, with many making the same joke that Cindy Williams did on Facebook when she commented, “And then they will make Josslyn the station chief. ” Although elsewhere in the thread, Grace Albano Kelliher had another idea: “I think Jason [Steve Burton] will take over Director of WSB position!”

Kaylee Cordray has already started a petition on Change.org, hoping to gather enough signatures from fans to convince GH to reverse their decision and keep McKenna — and Jack — on the canvas.

Kelly Sullivan Joins B&B as Darcy

According to TV Insider, which broke the news of Sullivan’s hiring, the actress has already begun taping and is set to make her B&B debut on Thursday, August 27. The outlet reports that Darcy “arrives in Los Angeles as her daughter finds herself caught in the increasingly tense conflict between the Forrester and Spencer families.”

Sullivan’s career in daytime television began in 2011, when she was tapped by GH to replace Megan Ward as Kate Howard, also known as Connie Falconeri, Sonny Corinthos’ (Maurice Benard) psychologically troubled love interest and Crimson‘s editor. She exited the show in 2013, when Connie was shot dead by Ava Jerome (Maura West).

From 2014-16, Sullivan starred on Y&R as Sage Warner, who was introduced as Adam Newman’s (then-Justin Hartley) co-conspirator and went on to have a son, Christian, with Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) before dying in a car crash.

Sullivan spoke highly of her experience on Y&R, B&B’s sister show, in her exit interview with Soap Opera Digest, noting, “There is so much love in that Y&R building… I will miss all of the people that I came in contact with every single day I worked on Y&R. It is a very special thing to go to work and feel like you are a part of a family. I will always treasure that.”

The actress earned Daytime Emmy nominations for both soap roles, Outstanding Supporting Actress for her work on GH in 2014 and for her Y&R work in 2017.

Sullivan began her career as a musical theater actress, making her Broadway debut in Contact in 2000 and going on to appear in Bells Are Ringing and Young Frankenstein.

She has built a diverse television credit list outside of her work in soaps. She starred as Bonnie Hayes on TLC’s Tyler Perry-produced drama, Too Close to Home, for two seasons beginning in 2016. Between 2014 and 2020, she played the recurring role of Kris Hart on the Nickelodeon series Henry Danger, and she appeared as June Hall-Yoshida on two seasons of Netflix’s Never Have I Ever between 2021 and 2023. Other episodic work includes The Morning Show, The Winchesters, Chicago P.D., Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

In 2017, the actress played the role of Kathryn in the Denzel Washington drama Roman J. Israel, Esq. and will be seen in a lead role in Ethan Almighty: Ethan’s Law, starring opposite Kelsey Grammer (ex-Dr. Canard, Another World), Selma Blair, Brandon Routh (ex-Seth, One Life to Live), and Trevor Donovan (ex-Jeremy, Days of Our Lives).

Michael Warns Serena

Chris McKenna Out at GH

WSB Chief Jack Brennan was originally played by Charles Mesure, who debuted on December 1, 2023. Mesure chose to leave GH and he aired for the final time on January 30, 2025, just as Brennan’s romance with Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) was heating up.

McKenna made his Port Charles debut the following week, telling Soap Opera Digest that having known Wright for so long helped him jump right into the storyline. “I know it was jarring to the fans, the timing of the way I came in here, but Laura and I have known each other for decades and it was a really, really special thing as soon as we started working together,” he said. “The first thing we had to shoot was the Valentine’s Day episode and we immediately had to go right into the heavy romance. That could have been a challenge, but it was so much fun and she made it great.”

He began his stint on GH as a recurring player, but in August 2025, he confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that he had signed a contract with the show. “The overwhelming support from you beautiful people helped make it happen,” he wrote. “Appreciate you all so much. I’d love to give a big old (CLASSIFIED) kiss to each one of you!”

Even as McKenna inked a deal with the show, Brennan and Carly’s relationship was hitting the skids: When she discovered that he’d secretly recruited her daughter, Josslyn (Eden McCoy), as a WSB agent, she began plotting against him with the help of Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart), leading to a dramatic showdown this past spring in which Brennan learned that Carly had been playing him for months — and sleeping with his enemy, Valentin.

After his split from Carly — and surviving both a bout of locked-in syndrome courtesy of Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) and an attempt on his life by corrupt WSB Director Ross Cullum (Andrew Hawkes) — things seemed to be looking up for Brennan as he fell into a surprise sexual entanglement with Nina.

However, it now appears as though the Jack/Nina honeymoon period will soon be coming to an end.

McKenna’s exit from GH comes 26 years after he began his soap career at the age of 12, playing Joey Buchanan on ABC’s One Life to Live from 1990-93. In 2014, he returned to daytime to portray cop/murderer Mark Harding on CBS’s The Young and the Restless. After that gig ended in 2015, he played the short-term role of Dr. Hayden on The Bold and the Beautiful.

News of the actor’s departure comes amid a rash of cast changes at the show. In July, Ryan Paevey (Cassius Faison) and Andrew Hawkes (Cullum) wrapped their runs, the show wrote out Maxie Jones, the long-running character played by Kirsten Storms (Maxie Jones), along with Maxie’s love interest, Damian Spinelli (Bradford Anderson), and Nathan Dean aired for the final time as Ethan Lovett. Meanwhile, GH introduced several new cast members, including Dean Geyer as Tristan Roberts and Kelly Kruger as Serena Baldwin.

Ron Carlivati and Jamey Giddens Will Write All My Children Movie

The All My Children revival is a passion project driven by Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, who met and married while starring as Hayley and Mateo Santos on the beloved ABC soap and are producing the Lifetime movies through their production company, Milojo Productions.

Daytime Confidential was the first to report the news Ripa and Consuelos have hired the pair as to co-write the AMC movie. Carlivati and Giddens subsequently confirmed the news on their respective Instagrams.

Carlivati — a Daytime Emmy winner who has head-written two ABC soaps, One Life to Live and General Hospital, served as the head writer for Days of Our Lives and was most recently a member of the writing team of Beyond the Gates — wrote in an Instagram story, “Excited to confirm that @jameygiddens and I are writing the first of two ‘All My Children’ movies, coming soon to @lifetimetv!”

On his own Instagram, Giddens — who on Monday began his other high-profile writing gig as one of the new co-head writers of The Young and the Restless — enthused, “I’ve been booked and busy in 2026. Before I received the life-changing offer to co-head write @youngandrestlesscbs, Andrew Stearn (@redcoatroad), the @agnesnixonamc estate, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos tapped @carlivatiron and me to write the first of two planned All My Children reunion movies for @lifetimetv! God is good. All. The. Time. #AllMyChildren.”

What Will the All My Children Movie Focus On?

All My Children ran on ABC from 1970 until 2011, and had a brief afterlife via a 2013 Internet reboot. The show was created by the late Agnes Nixon, and the revival is being produced in partnership with her estate.

Ripa and Consuelos recently spoke to The Los Angeles Times about their efforts to bring the world of Pine Valley back to life and revealed that they will both briefly appear in the upcoming movie. The revival will be set in the present and “and focus on what beloved characters like Erica Kane [Susan Lucci] and Maria Santos Grey [Eva LaRue] are doing now,” according to the outlet.

Zipped Lips

Tracy wanted to take Brook Lynn to Manhattan so she’d be out of town during Curtis’s trial, but Brook Lynn didn’t want to leave Phoebe. Overwhelmed with guilt, Brook Lynn considered coming clean about what she believed to be her part in the accident, hoping that might lead to peace between Curtis and Isaiah. Tracy made Brook Lynn realize all that she’d stood to lose by speaking up. Knowing that Chase might never forgive her for keeping the secret, Brook Lynn was resolved to stay quiet to save her marriage and protect her family.

The Scarlet Letter

Before Curtis’s assault trial began, Martin attempted to persuade Molly to agree to a plea bargain that didn’t include jail time, but Molly held firm. Out in the courtroom hallway, Lucas intervened when Portia, Isaiah, Curtis, and Jordan had a heated run-in. Joe complimented Lucas on how he’d defused the situation, and when they realized they were both there to testify, Joe asked whether Lucas would be impartial, given that Portia and Isaiah were his colleagues.

In the courtroom, Molly cautioned Isaiah that Curtis’ attorney would try to bait him on the stand, and it was vital to their case that he didn’t lose his cool. Jordan tried to convince Portia to tell the truth for Desmond’s sake and testify that the assault was merely a domestic situation, but Portia refused.

During her opening statement, Molly told the jury that the car accident was a red herring, and the punch that caused Isaiah’s injury was illegal. When Martin addressed the jury, he stated that Curtis was provoked and Isaiah was at fault for his own injury in the domestic altercation.

Next, Lucas testified without issue. When Joe took the stand, Martin tried to get him to admit that he may have jumped the gun in arresting Curtis rather than deescalating a domestic situation. Later, Lucas checked in with Joe out in the hallway. When Lucas said he didn’t think the arrest was unnecessary, Joe replied that he hoped everyone involved got justice.

When it was Portia’s turn to take the stand, she testified that before the punch, Curtis had goaded Isaiah as Isaiah was trying to leave. At Bobbie’s, Lucy and her daughter schemed for Serena to seduce Michael so they could regain the Deception shares he’d bought from Maxie. When Lucy asked if Serena was comfortable with the plan, Serena replied that she saw it as them evening things up with the Quartermaines.

Later, Lucy confided in Felicia about her ulterior motive in asking her daughter to visit. Felicia pointed out that Serena had made her own choice and encouraged Lucy to trust in that. Lucy gushed that Serena and Michael might be a perfect match — and her daughter could even wear her red wedding dress if she one day married Alan’s grandson.

Slip And Fall

Michael and Jacinda ran into Willow and Wiley at the Metro Court pool. While the boys swam, Willow asked Jacinda to stay away from the children, but Jacinda brushed her off. Later, Jack tracked down Willow at the pool, and when Michael and Jacinda spied them speaking, Michael worried that whatever his ex and the WSB chief were talking about would be bad news for him.

Jack told Willow it was a bad idea to pressure the PCPD to reopen the case against Michael for Drew’s shooting. Annoyed that her mother had relayed that info to Jack, Willow declared she was willing to take the risk of Anna uncovering the camera footage if it meant more time with her children.

Decked out in a skimpy bikini, Serena arrived at the pool and watched as Michael said goodbye to Wiley. Before leaving, Willow told Michael to ask Jacinda what they’d spoken about, curious to know what Jacinda relayed to him. Setting her sights on her target, Serena began stalking across the pool deck to flirt with Michael but slipped on a puddle and landed squarely in Jack’s lap!

Sonny summoned Ava to his house and demanded to know if she was involved in Ethan’s disappearance. Ava insisted she had no idea why Ethan ditched her or where he’d gone but relayed that he’d called her from a burner phone to tell her that he wasn’t coming back. Ava then questioned if Ethan took off because Sonny asked him to kill Drew (to keep Drew away from Michael).

Denying the accusation, Sonny wondered if Ava spoke negatively about him in front of Avery and warned Ava not to forget that there were consequences if anyone came after his family or anyone close to him. “And that includes you or Drew,” he noted.

Lyndsy Fonseca and Khary Payton’s Soap History

Fonseca will play the role of Avery, while Payton is set to appear as a character named Ron.

On Y&R, Fonseca appeared from 2001-05 as Colleen, the daughter of Traci Abbott (Beth Maitland) and Brad Carlton (Don Diamont). She assumed the role when Colleen, who was born on screen in 1992, was aged up to a teenager.

After her exit from the show, Fonseca played the recurring role of Penny Mosby, Ted Mosby’s (Josh Radnor) future daughter, on the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, and recurred on Desperate Housewives as Dylan Mayfair, the adopted daughter of Adam Mayfair (Nathan Fillion, ex-Joey Buchanan, One Life to Live). She is also known for her work as Alex Udinov in The CW’s Nikita and movies like Hot Tub Time Machine.

The actress has starred in multiple projects for Hallmark, including Next Stop, Christmas, Where Are You, Christmas?, Holiday Crashers, Single on the 25th and The Love Heist.

Payton appeared on GH in 2011. His character, Terrell, was a doctor who had been romantically involved with the deranged Dr. Lisa Niles (Brianna Brown). Lisa, who had her sights set on Dr. Patrick Drake (Jason Thompson), tasked Terrell with seducing Patrick’s wife, Dr. Robin Scorpio-Drake (Kimberly McCullough), but he couldn’t bring himself to go through with the mission.

After his character’s quiet exit from Port Charles, Payton starred as Ezekiel Sutton, also known as King Ezekiel, on AMC’s The Walking Dead and has had a prolific career as a voiceover actor, including a long-running role as Cyborg on DC Comics’ animated Teen Titans Go!

Holiday Touchdown: A Bears Love Story filmed in Chicago in July and will premiere as part of the Hallmark Channel’s holiday season lineup later this year.
