Comings and Goings: John Oliver Joins General Hospital and Days of Our Lives

John Oliver, Emmy-winning comedian and star of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, revealed on the June 28th episode of his HBO talk show that he will be appearing on General Hospital next week, and has “already taped a week of episodes on Days of Our Lives,” as well.

John Oliver Heads to Port Charles and Salem

According to an ABC press release, Oliver has been cast “in a significant guest role.” His episodes will air on Thursday, July 2, Friday, July 3 and Monday, July 6. “I’m going to spoil anything,” Oliver said on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, but he did show the above photo, a still from his upcoming appearance. “Yes, that is me,” he grinned, “surrounded by men with guns, and yes, my hair has been dipped in an inkwell. And if you can’t tell from my face there, I’m acting really hard.”

Oliver’s DAYS appearances are slated for August 11, 12 and 14.

Oliver’s visits to daytime were set in motion several months ago. On the March 8 episode of his show, Oliver did a segment on his talk show about sports commentator Stephen A. Smith’s decade-long GH run in the recurring role of Brick, Sonny Corinthos’ (Maurice Benard) surveillance expert in which he pleaded to be cast on one of the five network soaps.

In a statement, GH Executive Producer Frank Valentini said, “When John Oliver publicly threw down the gauntlet and said he wanted to appear on a soap, we didn’t hesitate for a second. He was everything you’d hope he’d be: prepared, professional, funny, and genuinely kind to everyone on set. He plays an integral character in the story, and I can’t wait for fans to see who he crosses paths within Port Charles.”

Oliver said in a statement, “General Hospital was everything I hoped it would be. It’s a true honor to be a small stain on the history of this illustrious show.”

In the original soap-themed segment on his show, Oliver summarized some of the more outlandish things Stephen A. Smith has gotten to do as Brick, then said, “I will admit it, the reason I am bringing this up is because I am jealous. I have a genuine love for soaps.”

He continued, “To all the soap operas out there, let me say this: I am officially offering myself to you. Write me a role, and I will be on your set so fast it will make your head spin.”

Oliver then laid out “a few conditions” for his hypothetical appearance. “First, I don’t want to play myself — I want to be a character and I want his name to be ridiculous,” he declared. “Also, I want to do something juicy, like murder, or slapping, or being slapped, or being someone’s long-lost something. And ideally, I’d like a dramatic close-up of my face. But in return, trust me, I will give my all to this performance.”

The talk show host concluded, “Call me, soaps! I am available, I’m willing to travel, and I want this more than you could possibly understand.”

Shortly thereafter, Smith made a response video on Instagram in which he said, “I’m going to make a call in to General Hospital about you, buddy.” GH then replied to the video from its own official account, writing, “We may have just the part for him. Our DMs are open.”

There is no word yet on when Oliver’s DAYS episodes will air, but Oliver shared a photo of himself on the show in a scene with Dan Feuerriegel (EJ).

“I genuinely cannot wait for everyone to see what these two soaps have done,” Oliver beamed at the end of the June 28 segment and he thanked the shows for “playing along” with his soap-acting aspirations.

Beyond the Gates Plans a Week of Repeat Episodes With Big Moments

Sometimes, soaps will air a repeat on a holiday, but Beyond the Gates is airing an entire week of encore episodes leading up to the Fourth of July. The shows being broadcast the week of June 29 feature a celebration, a death, a special guest, and more.

Relive the Drama

New fans who recently discovered BTG during its big crossover event with Young and Restless can take advantage of this opportunity to catch up on some big moments that recently occurred. And longtime fans who have been with the CBS soap for a while can revisit these particular moments.

From Monday, June 29, through Wednesday, July 1, BTG will air three episodes that were originally broadcast from May 18-20. These are the shows featuring the gala cotillion intercut with the hunt for the leader of the plasma ring. At the celebration, Samantha (Najah Jackson) was crowned Platinum Deb, while a shootout at the warehouse between the police and the blood runners left Derek (Ben Gavin) fighting for his life — a battle he ultimately lost.

On Thursday, July 2, BTG will jump back to the April 3 episode where Fairmont Crest celebrated Easter. This hour also includes a performance from special guest Jennifer Holiday, whom Vernon (Clifton Davis) arranged to visit as a surprise for his wife, Anita (Tamara Tunie).

Finally, on Friday, July 3, there will be a rebroadcast of the April 6 episode where Jacob (Jibre Hordges) and Naomi (Arielle Prepetit) are forced to celebrate their wedding anniversary separately because he is on an undercover police assignment. But although they are apart, the couple recalls their lives together from their first date to becoming husband and wife.

BTG will pick up with brand new episodes on Monday, July 6, right where the drama left off on Friday, June 26.

Fighting for Survival

Kyle (Michael Mealor) was supposed to keep Dr. Markham (Jere Burns) while Jack (Peter Bergman) attempted to infiltrate the doctor’s house in an attempt to rescue Diane (Susan Walters). But now something appears to have gone terribly wrong as Kyle turns to Traci (Beth Maitland) to ask, “Have you seen or heard from my dad today?” Traci casually responds, “No, not today,” before growing concerned and wondering, “Has something happened?” Kyle’s face falls as he admits, “I think he might be in real trouble.”

Trapped inside Dr. Markham’s home, Diane has realized that escape is impossible, so she’s changed her tactic to try to charm the shrink into letting his guard down. “Isn’t there also a psychological term for when you’re developing an… attachment to your therapist?” she asks during one of their sessions. “It’s quite common,” he replies, adding, “It can be a positive part of the process.” Diane puts a flirty smile on her face as she declares, “Well then, let’s just say I’m really looking forward to our next session.” Will Laurence fall for her act?

At the hospital, Victor (Eric Braeden) stares at Nikki’s (Melody Thomas Scott) engagement ring and wedding band resting in his hand as we hear Victoria (Amelia Heinle) report, “Mom’s out of surgery.” But when Nick (Joshua Morrow) asks, “How’d it go?” she admits, “It’s too soon to tell.” Victor broods in the waiting area as the family waits to hear if the surgery was successful in removing the tumor pressing on Nikki’s optic nerve and restoring her sight.

The Young and The Restless Shakeup: Josh Griffith Out as Head Writer!

A big change is coming behind the scenes at The Young and the Restless: Josh Griffith, who has served as head writer since 2019, is leaving the show.

Josh Griffith Exits The Young and the Restless

According to TV Insider, which broke the news of Griffith’s departure, it was the scribe’s choice to step down from his head-writing role, and the show’s cast and crew learned of his decision earlier today.

Griffith’s resignation is not effective immediately, but how long he will continue to pen the action in Genoa City is unclear. Y&R has yet to name his successor as head writer.

Less than two months ago, a Y&R spokesperson confirmed to Soap Opera Digest that Griffith had opted to step down from his other role at the show, co-executive producer, to focus on his writing duties.

A seven-time Daytime Emmy winner, Griffith’s career in soap operas dates back decades and spans all three major broadcast networks. He started out at NBC’s Santa Barbara in 1988 and left in 1991, soon landing at ABC’s One Life to Live, where he was promoted to co-head writer before exiting in 1995. Alongside Robert Guza Jr., Griffith co-created Sunset Beach, which ran on NBC from 1997-99. OLTL brought Griffith back as co-head writer from 2003-04, after which he joined the writing team of CBS’ As the World Turns.

.Griffith began his association with Y&R in 2006, serving as a creative consultant and writing episode breakdowns and was soon promoted to co-executive producer.

He left in 2008, moving to NBC’s Days of Our Lives as co-head writer from 2015-16. He then returned to Y&R as supervising producer, eventually resuming duties as head writer in 2019.

Griffith had served as both head writer and executive producer from 2023-25, when Sally McDonald joined him as co-EP. McDonald has been serving in the position solo since earlier this year.

Creative Differences: Soon, the futures of Victor (Eric Braeden) and Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott), as well as Y&R’s other characters, will be penned by a different writer.

Several lives were in peril on the Friday, June 26, episode of General Hospital. Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) wound up in handcuffs, Charlotte (Bluesy Burke) was nearly abducted, Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) was in for a rude awakening after Brook Lynn framed her, Cassius (Ryan Paevey) double-crossed Laura (Genie Francis) and Jordan (Tanisha Harper), Anna (Finola Hughes) revealed to Felicia (Kristina Wagner) that “Nathan” wasn’t Nathan and a whole lot more! Here’s how it all played out.

No Way Out

In Tortola, Rocco insisted to Dante and Lulu that he wouldn’t leave without Britt. Eventually, Britt convinced him to go with his parents, explaining that Cullum was still hunting for her because she’d left behind an unfinished project and it was too dangerous for him to stay with her. The two shared an emotional goodbye, with Rocco making Britt promise to take her medication and keep changing locations.

After Dante made a mysterious phone call, the Falconeris left. Once they were in the car, Rocco said he’d never forgive himself if anything happened to Britt. Back at the house, Britt was about to give herself an injection — unaware that her medication had been replaced with poison by Cullum — when two police officers burst in to arrest her for kidnapping!

Make A Run For It

Charlotte arrived on the Crimson floor for work, unaware that the man in the elevator with her had followed her from the pool deck. Charlotte and Nina got into an argument over her former stepmother’s betrayal of Valentin, with Charlotte snapping that she felt like Nina had chosen protecting Willow over protecting her.

Nina tried to assure Charlotte that she still cared for her, but the conversation was cut short when Willow called to let her mom know that she was being questioned at the PCPD. Nina felt guilty about leaving Charlotte without finishing their talk, but after Charlotte snapped that Nina was good at leaving, then turned her back, Nina set out for the police station.

Danny dropped by to make up with Charlotte. He confided that he didn’t say anything to Alexis about Rocco being the shooter, but he did break into the WSB office hoping to expose that Cullum was a double agent. Aggravated by Danny’s reckless behavior, Charlotte lashed out, saying he could have gotten himself killed. She sternly told Danny that the best way for him to help his father was to stay out of things.

Danny stormed out, but was suspicious when he crossed paths with a stranger stepping off the elevator into the lobby. Approaching Charlotte, the man introduced himself as Agent Mark McKay with the WSB and said he’d been ordered to bring her in. Charlotte fought back as the agent attempted to abduct her, but Danny rushed in and knocked the agent out, giving him and Charlotte the chance to escape!

Man of Action: Charlotte was grateful for Danny’s (Asher Antonyzyn) hot-headedness when he rushed to her rescue.

Return to Innocence

At the pool, Joe presented Willow with a search warrant for the trip log in her car. Curtis jumped to her defense as Willow proclaimed her innocence. She eventually agreed to move the conversation to the PCPD after noticing that a man across the pool deck was filming her. Meanwhile, Chase tried to focus his attention on Brook Lynn and Phoebe, but to his wife’s dismay, he kept glancing over to where Willow was speaking with Curtis and Det. Fitzpatrick. When Curtis filled Chase in on what had happened, Chase told Brook Lynn that he wanted to go to the PCPD to help Willow. She feigned understanding and gave him her blessing — her husband clueless that it was all part of her bigger plan.

Isaiah arrived and Curtis accused him of allowing Willow to face consequences for a crime he had committed. Isaiah warned that Curtis would be facing more than just assault charges if Curtis kept disparaging his name. Later, Brook Lynn told Isaiah about the search warrant. Isaiah mused that if the police found proof of Willow’s guilt, then Curtis would have to acknowledge that he was innocent.

Crash Landing

With Mac and Dante both on personal leave, Justine asked “Nathan” to take over the lead on the Sidwell search. When Joe arrived at the PCPD with Willow, Justine instructed Joe to check the trip log on Willow’s SUV. In the interrogation room, Willow accused the Acting D.A. of framing her, but was shocked when Justine revealed that two witnesses — Lucy and Drew — placed her on Route 91 on the night of the crash. She had a particularly strong reaction to Justine’s mention of Drew.

Chase showed up before Justine could question Willow further, and an irritated Justine let them speak alone. Willow thanked Chase for coming to help her and told her that Lucy and Drew were supposedly witnesses against her. Chase realized that when Joe was with Drew, the detective must have asked a yes or no question and that Drew had blinked in a way that implicated her. Willow claimed that Joe must have misinterpreted Drew’s response.

Out in the squad room, Curtis ran into Nina, and he assured her that Isaiah was the guilty party in his car accident. Chase and Willow emerged from the interrogation room, since she wasn’t technically under arrest and didn’t have to stay. Just as the group was readying to leave, Justine shocked Willow, Curtis, Nina, and Chase when she revealed that the trip log from Willow’s BMW SUV placed her on Route 91 seconds after Jordan and Curtis’s accident!

Two-Faced

Laura and Jordan told “Nathan” that they believed Sidwell was hiding in a house he’d purchased in Port Charles. He asked who else they’d told about the property, and when they said they’d gone straight to him, “Nathan” urged them to keep it quiet because Sidwell likely had someone on the inside at the PCPD. Once out into the hallway, Cassius made a phone call and told the other person that there was “a Sidwell problem.”

On It: “Nathan” (Ryan Paevey) assured Jordan (Tanisha Harper, c.) and Laura (Genie Francis) he would look into their lead.

Meanwhile, Anna reunited with Emma, Mac, and Felicia at the clinic in France. As they filled her in on life in Port Charles, Anna was troubled to hear that James had skipped a vacation with Maxie and Spinelli to spend more time with Nathan.

Outside Anna’s room, Mac and Felicia asked Dr. Laurent when they could bring her home. The therapist explained that while Anna was significantly better, the team wanted to make sure she didn’t relapse.

Alone with Emma, Anna pulled out the stack of letters from her nightstand and shared how much she’d looked forward to her receiving the notes from her granddaughter. Anna then requested to speak privately with Felicia, so Emma fetched her. Anna told Felicia that she was trying to figure out what memories of her complicated history with Faison she could trust, as well as who she could trust… and since Felicia was her best friend, Anna hoped Felicia believed what she had to tell her: “Nathan West is not who he says he is,” Anna declared to a stunned Felicia.

General Hospital Alum Chad Duell Drops His New Single, ‘If You Need Me’

Chad Duell, who exited General Hospital last year after a 15-year run as Michael Corinthos, surprised fans this week by revealing that he was releasing music. Now, his first single,”If You Need Me,” has dropped on Spotify.

Chad Duell’s New Music Track is Released

As a recording artist, the Daytime Emmy-winning star is going by the name Duelly, which has long been his Instagram handle. He is listed in the credits of his new house music track not only as the performing artist, but as the composer and lyricist and beatmaker of “If You Need Me.”

The track clocks in at 4 minutes and 22 seconds and features Duell performing sparse lyrics over a lively, beat-driven electronic sound. “If you need me, call / Any hour, if it’s night or day / I’ll be on my way / To you,” he sings.

Duell has been keeping a low profile on social media since his departure from GH in January 2025, mostly popping online to share sweet photos of his life with partner Luana Lucci and their son, Dawson, who will turn three years old on August 30.

In late 2024, Duell shocked the soap world by announcing his decision to leave GH in an Instagram post.”This wasn’t an easy decision for me, but it feels like the right time in my life. I’m beyond grateful to [Executive Producer] Frank Valentini, the cast, crew, and everyone behind the scenes who have been like family to me throughout this amazing journey,” he wrote.

Duell subsequently opened up about his future plans when he appeared as a guest on Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) and Steve Burton’s (Jason) podcast, That’s Awesome. He explained, “Right now I’m just trying to grow in ways that maybe I feel like I’ve stifled myself… Sometimes you have to take drastic steps or make yourself feel uncomfortable to take a step. That’s kind of what I have not allowed myself to do in a long time, is to step into more of an uncomfortable situation and grow instead of just [being] comfortable and complacent. That’s the journey at this moment.”

“If You Need Me” is copyrighted by Golden Hour Records, a label based in Austin, TX. According to its profile on the music platform Bandcamp, Golden Hour Records has been “[serving] the Texas underground music folks since 1995. Catalog ranges from noise rock to ambient electronic to punk to folk. Whatever we’re into.”

Entertainment Tonight: While Duell did not sing at the 2014 Nurses’ Ball as Michael, he did perform a striptease in the “Magic Milo” number.

The Bold and the Beautiful: Hope Is ‘Terrified About the Fallout’ of Her Betrayal, Says Annika Noelle

In the June 26 episode of Bold and Beautiful, Hope will finally be publicly revealed as the person responsible for Logan’s newest collection. The actress who plays her, Annika Noelle, is opening up about her character’s decision to take her talents to Logan and previewed the potential repercussions once her big secret is out.

The Big Unveiling

After a rough run at Forrester, which included an ill-advised scheme to team up with Carter (Lawrence Saint-Victor) to take control of the company, Hope saw her Hope for the Future line was pushed to the side. This made the designer the perfect recruit for her aunt, Katie (Heather Tom), who has launched a rival fashion house, Logan. In a new interview with TV Insider, Noelle explained that Hope’s decision to leave Forrester after so many years was still a difficult one.

At the heart of her conflict? Knowing that her mother, Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang), will likely view it as a huge betrayal. “Brooke is the only reason she hasn’t cut bait sooner,” Noelle noted. “I think the real thing holding her back is her fear of the retribution of what the fallout might be with her mother, as well as having to let go of the past a little bit.”

Katie has offered her niece every assurance that Logan will treat her with a respect that she never received at Forrester and Noelle sees Hope’s leap to Logan as a potential game-changer for her character. “I’m really hoping that this is going to mark an emergence for Hope, of finding her own voice again,” the actress said. “Katie’s kind of shepherding that along, and how much of that is Katie’s own kind of self-interest, I don’t know, but I’m choosing to believe she’s trying to help Hope grow a little more and really come into her own.”

That newfound confidence could take quite a beating, though, once Hope’s debut fashion show for Logan climaxes with the big reveal that she is the company’s new creative director. Everyone at Forrester will have something to say about that — but especially Brooke.

But Noelle thinks Hope is ready for whatever battle may ensue. “In one aspect, she’s so proud and finally feels like she’s setting out on her own, but at the same time, she knows this is a huge betrayal and she’s terrified about the fallout,” Noelle previewed. “Instead of it being a completely joyous occasion, with the way they went about it, there’s going to be some fallout, but she thinks the risk is worth the reward.”

The Young and the Restless, Guiding Light Alum Ellen Weston Dies at 87

Actress and songwriter Ellen Weston — an alum of Young and Restless, Guiding Light, and Another World who had a prolific career in television, film, Broadway, and music — passed away at the age of 87. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Weston died on May 28 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

A Life Lived To The Fullest

Born in New York, Weston attended the Performing Arts High School, Hofstra University, New York University, and Hunter College before landing her first Broadway gig in 1960 as an understudy in the drama Toys in the Attic. She went on to appear in the Broadway productions of A Far Country in 1961 and Mary, Mary in 1962 before making her way to television. Weston’s daytime debut came playing Robin Fletcher on GL from 1963-64 (one of six actresses to take on the character, who, during Weston’s stint, secretly married Alex Fletcher). She then moved on to play both Carol Pearson and nurse Karen Gregory on AW from 1964-65. Between 1978 and 1980, Weston made a handful of appearances on Y&R as Suzanne, the vengeful ex-wife of hairdresser Derek Thurston. Jill Foster and Katherine Chancellor vied for Derek’s affection, and in 1978, Suzanne infamously poisoned Katherine into a state of psychosis.

Weston also had several notable prime time roles, such as Dr. Steele on NBC’s Get Smart and as Hondo’s wife, Betty, on ABC’s S.W.A.T. Her primetime resume also includes spots on Run For Your Life, Bonanza, Bewitched, Barnaby Jones, The Bob Newhart Show, Wonder Woman, and more. The performer was a successful lyricist as well, having co-written songs with Lesley Gore for the singer’s albums Someplace Else Now and Love Me By Name.

Later in her life, Weston attended law school and transitioned to a career behind the camera, working as a writer. In addition to penning many movie scripts (including co-writing the 1999 ABC telepic And the Beat Goes On: The Sonny and Cher Story with Sonny Bono), Weston landed in the writer’s room at Capitol in 1986. Then, in 2003, GL executive producer John Conboy tapped her for head writer duties on that soap.

During her year-long tenure as GL’s top scribe, Weston was honored with a Writers Guild of America Award for her work. “I love it,” Weston told Soap Opera Digest of penning the daytime drama. “One of the first jobs I had as a kid was on GL. So, I really have an affinity for this show. I also love the form. I like to think of every day as a mini movie. It starts in one place and ends [in another], and we take the story further each day. That is a satisfying way of telling stories.”

Previously married to music engineer Ami Hadani and composer Marvin Laird, Weston is survived by a son, sound designer Jon Weston. Digest sends its deepest condolences to Weston’s family and friends during this difficult time.
