Catching Up With ... Corbin Bernsen (ex-Durant, 2004-06)

— By Tom Stacy

First, there was Carpool Guy. Now, he's shopping Donna On Demand to distributors. Currently, actor/writer/producer/director Corbin Bernsen (ex-Durant, GH; ex-Todd, Y&R) is finishing production on his third feature, Dead Air. Here, he offers us a sneak peek:

Soap Opera Digest: Tell us about Dead Air.
Corbin Bernsen: It's a horror/thriller about what happens when a virus gets loose and turns people into zombie-like creatures.

Digest: Is it gory?
Bernsen: No, it's not terribly gory. It's not about blood and guts. In fact, there's some stuff we took out. It's more a sociological horror/thriller.

Digest: How do you film a zombie invasion on a limited budget?
Bernsen: It all takes place in a radio station, which used to be the set for Donna On Demand, by the way. My brother [Collin Bernsen] and I just rebuilt it. The idea is it all comes to a head as the station reaches a nationwide audience and we track where everything's happening around the country. It really helps create a claustrophobic atmosphere.

Digest: Tell us about the cast.
Bernsen: It stars Bill Moseley [ex-Joel, DAYS], who plays a shock jock. He's done a number of horror films. It also stars Pat Tallman (ex-Christy, GENERATIONS), Joshua Feinman, David Moscow. I'm in it and, of course, there's a part for my mom [Jeanne Cooper; Katherine, Y&R].

Ready For Her Close Up: Bernsen directs his favorite leading lady, mom Jeanne Cooper (Katherine, Y&R), in the quirky Donna On Demand, where she plays an aging porno queen.

Digest: Where does the film stand now?
Bernsen: Right now, we're doing the sound and music. Mike Post [the composer of the themes for LAW & ORDER, HILL STREET BLUES and L.A. LAW] is a buddy of mine and he's doing the music on it. He's just brilliant. We're lucky to have him. There are a few visual effects to take care of but it's very near completion.

Digest: Where can fans find out more about the film?
Bernsen: We've got a great Web site. It's www.deadair-movie.com. It's really cool. And go to http://www.donnaondemand.com and you can see the picture of my mom's character, who's a 1960s porn queen, and you'll see the "DVDs" of her back when she was a porn star. They're hysterical! You've really got to check it out.
