In Memoriam

GH superstar Anthony Geary, who created the iconic role of Lucas Lorenzo “Luke” Spencer in 1978 and played him off and on until his retirement in 2015, passed away on December 14 in Amsterdam. His husband, Claudio Gama, confirmed the sad news to TV Insider. Over the course of his storied career, the star took home a record eight Daytime Emmy wins in the Outstanding Lead Actor category, and also received five Soap Opera Digest Awards (three for Favorite Actor, back when the awards were called The Soapys, and two for Outstanding Lead Actor. Born on May 29, 1947 in Coalville, Utah, Geary made his daytime debut in 1971 as David Lockhart on Bright Promise and also played villainous George Curtis on Y&R in 1973. In addition to playing Luke, Geary was featured on GH from 1991-93 as Luke’s look-alike cousin, Bill Eckert. Geary’s pairing with Genie Francis (Laura) catapulted them both to stardom. The actress recalled her longtime leading man as “a powerhouse as an actor. Shoulder to shoulder with the greats. No star burned brighter than Tony Geary. He was one of a kind. As an artist, he was filled with a passion for the truth, no matter how blunt, or even a little rude it might be, but always hilariously funny.”
