IN MEMORIAM

Stars From John Stamos to Jonathan Jackson Pay Tribute to General Hospital Icon Anthony Geary

Comments

As news spread that General Hospital star Anthony Geary had passed away at the age of 78, tributes to the daytime icon began pouring in from all over. Longtime co-star Genie Francis (Laura) shared her own personal feelings on the heartbreaking loss, and many other people from GH and the daytime industry have also tried to put into words what the legendary actor meant to them. Here are just some of their heartfelt tributes.

Maurice Benard (Sonny)

“What can I say that’s not been said?” Benard posted to Twitter/X. “Two things about Tony. He was one of the funniest people I knew. I saw Tony in a one-man play, and I said it then and I’ll say it now — I never saw better acting in my life. I owe a lot to Tony. Daytime wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Luke/Laura.”

Erika Slezak (ex-Ronnie)

“I am so terribly saddened by the death of Tony Geary,” the Emmy winner best known as One Life to Live‘s Viki shared on her website. ” He was a charming man, a brilliant actor and all together a very nice man. I send my sincerest condolences to his husband Claudio, and I will keep him in my prayers. We had such fun together when we did the What If crossover promotions in 2010.  I thoroughly enjoyed him and loved watching him on television.”

Jonathan Jackson (ex-Lucky)

“My heart is broken at the news of Tony’s passing,” Jackson told TV Insider. “As an 11-year-old kid, he took me under his wing with a depth of grace, respect, and belief that I certainly didn’t deserve. He was my father in the arts, my mentor in the world of learning to trust one’s instincts and always believe in the power and beauty of story and performance. There were moments, many moments over the years working together that I can only describe as transcendent. I will cherish each and every one of them.”

Kin Shriner (Scott)

“Tony came on General Hospital and created Luke Spencer in one scene,” Shriner shared with TV Insider. “We became instant friends and always have been. I watched him shine for decades and loved every second — on stage and off!”

Jacob Young (ex-Lucky)

“I’m at a loss for words over the passing of my mentor, on-screen father, and dear friend, Anthony Geary,” wrote Young, the second actor to play Lucky, on Instagram. “He gave so much to his craft and cared deeply about his fellow actors. Even after my time on General Hospital, we always remained close, and I will forever be grateful for his guidance, generosity, and friendship. RIP Tony.”

Wally Kurth (Ned)

“It’s been a tough year,” Kurth said on Instagram. “We have lost another beloved actor from GH. I’m so saddened. I want to add my praise and deep respect for the one and only Tony Geary. He raised the acting performance bar in Daytime TV to a level I know I’ll never meet. As an actor who worked with him, I was always reminded of his skill, professionalism and integrity. He was the gold standard. And his 8 Emmy wins and countless nominations prove it. I wish I had had more scenes him – because he made me a better actor. He was funny, smart and opinionated. He liked to run his lines to learn them, which was funny to me since many of them were rewritten by him! He is terribly missed by all of us at GH. We will carry on. His spirit is always here in the studio. Sending my heartfelt condolences to his family and especially Claudio🙏❤️🫶👏👏 RIP Anthony Geary.”

Laura Wright (Carly)

“One of my first scenes with Tony we were in Kelly’s and he said, ‘Just so you know, I like to juggle, tap dance and sing all at the same time,’ and I laughed and said let’s go!!” Wright posted to Instagram. “I grew up watching the incredible Luke Spencer- I fell in love with daytime because I fell in love with Luke and Laura. My heart is so so sad – Daytime lost the one that changed it all !!! RIP 💔”

Greg Vaughan (ex-Lucky; Kial, Beyond the Gates)

“There are people who fill a room by demanding attention,” the third actor to play the role of Luke’s son shared on Instagram. “And then there are people like Tony — who never asked for it, yet held it effortlessly. For nearly seven years, I had the privilege of standing beside him on General Hospital, portraying his son, Lucky… and if anyone was Lucky, it was me! What I came to understand quickly was that Tony wasn’t interested in being celebrated — he was interested in being present. Present in the work. Present with his fellow actors. Present in the quiet moments that mattered far more than applause. When I first joined the show, months later we found ourselves in New York for the Emmys. Tony took me under his wing without fanfare, without hierarchy — just generosity. Sitting front row at Radio City Music Hall with him wasn’t about the ceremony. It was about being beside someone who carried himself with humility, curiosity, and kindness, even in moments meant to shine a light on him. One of my most treasured memories is a scene where my character lay on life support. Tony leaned in, called me “Cowboy,” and softly sang “Don’t Fence Me In.” It was simple. Tender. And unforgettable. He had me welling up while I was trying to be still. That was Tony — never pushing, never performing for effect, just telling the truth of the moment. He taught me that greatness doesn’t announce itself. It listens. It gives. It lifts others quietly. His impact on my life — personally and professionally — didn’t come from lessons spoken out loud, but from how he showed up every day with love and a smile. I am deeply grateful for the time, the trust, and the humanity he shared with me Tony, thank you for the work, the love, the laughter, the guidance — and for reminding me that the most meaningful legacies are carried softly. You will always be with me. R.I.P. 🕊️💔🙏🏼”

John Stamos (ex-Blackie)

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend and former co-star, Tony Geary,” Stamos shared on Instagram. “Coming on the heels of the tragic deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, whom I admired immensely — this feels like a heartbreaking moment for so many of us who grew up watching and learning from these giants of our craft. I was only 19 years old on my first job, General Hospital, and Tony could not have been kinder or more welcoming. At that age, everything feels big. He made it feel safe. I was mesmerized by his acting. I would stay after my scenes were finished just to watch him work — not because I had to, but because I wanted to learn. Watching Tony was like watching someone rewrite the rules in real time. He changed the face of daytime television. And in very real ways, he changed my life. What always stood out to me was how real he was. He never fell into the traps or tricks that can happen when you’re doing the volume needed for an hour show every day. He attacked every character and every script with honesty, intelligence, and fearlessness. There was no autopilot with Tony — ever. He was truly one of a kind. When he showed up for me when I got a star on the Walk of Fame, it meant the world to me. That was Tony. He showed up — quietly and generously. I wrote about him in my book because he is part of my foundation as an actor. He will always be part of my work. The way he committed, the way he listened, the way he elevated everyone around him — I carry that with me still. Thank you, Tony, for your brilliance, your kindness, and for setting the bar so impossibly high. You really stood out. Rest easy, my friend.”

Bradford Anderson (Spinelli)

“Tony was magic,” Anderson posted on Instagram. “The first scene I ever had with him I remember looking into his eyes and feeling connection, appreciation, and a dash of mischief. We loved to talk theater and share New York stories. So many of us owe him so much. Saying he’ll be missed doesn’t even come close. ❤️

Anders Hove (ex-Faison)

“Tony always went out of his way to be a good friend and great acting partner,” Hove shared with TV Insider. “Right up till the end, he was fun, funny, an incredible sense of humor, and wonderfully cynical in a beautiful way… He’ll always make me smile — and laugh — just thinking of him, which I always will.”

Susan Lucci (ex-Erica, AMC):

“My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Tony Geary, his GH family, and the legions of fans who loved him,” Lucci said on Instagram. “I cherish the time we spent doing a documentary in Kenya, on behalf of children—I remember we were both so touched and impacted by our experience there. Tony was such a talented actor and a wonderful man with a big heart. RIP Tony, knowing you will be in the hearts and memories of so many.🙏🙏🙏”

Kimberly McCullough (ex-Robin)

“1 of 1,” McCullough wrote on Instagram. “The truest of gentlemen. A fierce wit. A daring artist. A generous heart. RIP to the GOAT.”

Kathleen Gati (Obrecht)

“Absolutely heartbroken to hear this,” Gati shared on Instagram/X when the new of Geary’s passing broke. “Deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and fans. I will always be grateful to Anthony Geary for his support and kindness.”

Jon Lindstrom (Kevin)

“Hard to put into words what Anthony Geary meant to so many people,” Lindstrom posted to instagram. “I can tell you what I think: I’ve worked with everyone from geniuses to hacks and I can confidently say that, IMHO, Tony was one of the best American actors. Full stop. I’d seen him before I knew what General Hospital was. Streets of San Francisco. All In The Family. I also saw him on PBS in Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra w/ Timothy Dalton & Lynn Redgrave. He was always the best thing onscreen. When I started GH in 1992 he welcomed me with open arms. And damn that guy was FUNNY! Today, and for a while, my ❤️ is with Genie, Kin, Lynn, Jonathan, and Claudio. R.I.P.”

Brandon Barash (ex-Johnny)

“Sweet Tony (TG),” Barash wrote on Instagram. “How is it that you’ve left this earthly plane so prematurely? (although you wouldn’t think so) The notion that I have no words to adequately convey my pain and emptiness would bring you great joy and even some punches of laughter. The hours upon hours we’d spend on your boat or in your home discussing words — be it our favorite books, me reading your writings out loud, or you reading mine, our favorite curse words in different languages, etc…the irony isn’t lost on me. So here’s what I know: A piece of my heart shattered today. That’s okay, I’ll piece it back together with the most glittery glue I can find. The gaps in between the shards now imbued with memories from one of the most unique and at times whimsical friendships this life has given me. What you taught me about the craft and about life will be forever woven into the fabric of my being — yes, even the black pudding. You and Claudio are and will always be family. This loss has me, well, at a loss. You’d probably tell me to, “Buck up, Casanova.” I intend on doing just that. Rest in whimsy, friend. BB”

Ted King (ex-Alcazar)

“Tony was a phenomenal man, and an extraordinary talent,” King said on Twitter/X in reply to Soap Opera Digest‘s obituary. “Loved working with him daily. He would challenge every acting move you made. Sending love and good thoughts to his family. Rest in Peace, Tony. You will be missed!

Rick Springfield (ex-Noah)

“Sad to hear of Tony’s passing,” Springfield wrote on Instagram. “He was the reason GH went where it went in the early ‘80s. The rest of us rode along with him and did our part but Tony was the driver along with the great Gloria Monty. Had a really great evening with Tony and my guys in Amsterdam years ago. Such a good guy who deserved all the accolades he received. Love to those he left behind 🙏🏻❤️”

Tracey E. Bregman (Lauren, Young and Restless)

“I had the great opportunity to test with Tony,” the Y&R vet shared in an Instagram Story. “What a ride. He was such an incredible talent, fun and so sweet to me. Rest in Peace. So heartbreaking. 💔❤️🕊️✨”

Sarah Joy Brown (ex-Carly/Claudia)

“Rest well, dear Tony ❣️” Brown said on Instagram. “Sending my love and condolences to all who knew and loved him. When I first started, GH, Tony was one of my greatest supporters. He gave me the courage to play outside the box and follow my instincts. I can’t imagine playing Carly Spencer without him as my uncle Luke. I adored every single minute of working with him. 🥀🕊️”

We send our sincerest sympathies to his husband, Claudio, family, and friends. May he rest in peace.”

ABC Entertainment

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Anthony Geary, whose portrayal of Luke Spencer helped define General Hospital and daytime television,” ABC expressed in a statement. “Anthony captivated audiences for decades and earned a record eight Daytime Emmy Awards. The 1981 Luke and Laura wedding was a landmark moment that drew tens of millions of viewers and became part of television history. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and colleagues.”

Lauren B. Martin (ex-Camille, As the World Turns)

“I have been lucky enough to meet some remarkable people in my lifetime, Mr Geary one of them,” Martin shared on Instagram. “Our moments were few but incredibly impactful. He left an indelible impression, I believe, on everyone he met. I remember being in awe of him at an award show, of course I have watched him my entire life. He gave me a complete account of a performance I gave. He told me. ‘I’m watching you.’ What he whispered next in my ear. I will keep for myself, but I value it as much as any award or nomination I have ever received.🙏🏽 Having his approval meant the world to me. At another event, I remember feeling overwhelmed. He gently squeezed my hand and tilted my head upwards and winked at me…. A few years later, I had the honor of being his first interview after leaving the Emmy stage with yet another win… I wish I had an hour, but that 15 minutes was a master class. My deepest condolences to his partner and his family… to so many of my dear friends who loved him and knew him well. Thank you, Mr. Geary. We all are grateful. Rest in magical peace. ❤️🙏🏽”

Rachel Schwartz, Head of Daytime/Children’s & Family Emmys

“Our condolences are with our friends at ‘General Hospital’ on the passing of Anthony Geary, who won a record-breaking 8 Emmys in the Lead Actor category,” Schwartz said in a statement. “As one half of the power couple ‘Luke and Laura,’ their popularity brought daytime television into the zeitgeist and created one of the genre’s most beloved super-couples. Our sympathies are with his family, colleagues, and loved ones.”
