General Hospital’s New Wyndemere Exterior Has Fans Asking: Where Are the Parapets?

Comments

As a dangerous blizzard bears down on Port Charles, the January 27 episode of General Hospital left some longtime fans puzzling over an extreme makeover that occurred on the soap. After setting off a bomb to disable the power grid on Spoon Island, Josslyn (Eden McCoy) peered through her binoculars at Wyndemere to confirm that the lights had gone out in the estate. But when the exterior of the building was shown on screen (in the rookie agent’s night vision), viewers found themselves wondering what happened to the infamous Wyndemere parapets!

Taking The Fall

Wyndemere has long been portrayed as a gothic castle atop an island, complete with towers, hidden passageways and underground tunnels. But perhaps the most infamous feature of the building, one that fans have known and loved for years, is the parapets, as numerous characters have plummeted from them over the decades.

The first person to fall from the Wyndemere parapet was Katherine Bell (Mary Beth Evans), who literally stumbled into a trap that Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) had set for Helena Cassadine (Constance Towers) in May 1998. Although Katherine survived that fall thanks to Helena’s experimental drugs, she later perished when Helena herself pushed her off the parapet a second time in October 1999 to prevent her from trapping Nikolas Cassadine (Coltin Scott) into marriage.

Many other Port Charles residents have also taken the parapet plunge but survived. In November 2007, Anthony Zacchara (Bruce Weitz) jumped from the parapet while fleeing Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) and was paralyzed. Brad Cooper (Parry Shen) was pushed off of it by Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati) in March 2014 in an attempt to keep him from revealing the truth that Britt’s (Kelly Thiebaud) baby, Rocco (then called Ben), was really Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) and Lulu’s (then-Emme Rylan). In January 2020, Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) threw Ava Jerome (Maura West) from the parapet, but Nikolas (Marcus Coloma) rescued her from the water. Then, in December of that year, Ava planned to kill her brother, Julian Jerome (William deVry), but he jumped before she could shoot and managed to escape. Most recently, Esme Prince (Avery Kristen Pohl) fell from the parapet in August 2022 during a struggle with Ava.

Fans noted that the new Wyndemere is not only no longer a castle situated atop a rocky island (as previous establishing shots of its exterior depicted) but instead a stately manor set directly at water level — with nary a parapet in sight! In fact, the building used in that shot on GH is actually the National Maritime Museum located in Amsterdam. Originally designed as a warehouse in the water in the Dutch Classicism style with a geometric layout by Daniel Stalpaert in 1656, the museum moved into the building in 1973. It has a basement, but no underground tunnels.

Wyndemere has had several owners over the years, including the notorious Cesar Faison (Anders Hove). The property was in the hands of the Cassadines for many years until Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota) revealed in January 2025 that he had purchased the estate and moved in. He’s currently taking advantage of the isolation provided by Spoon Island to undertake a host of illegal activities, including holding Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) hostage.
