General Hospital: Maurice Benard Teases Sonny’s Future After Leaving the Mob
Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) are both leaving the mob on General Hospital — and Maurice Benard says that not only can the characters can change professions without losing their power positions in Port Charles but that what’s ahead for the longtime characters is “absolutely beautiful.”
Maurice Benard Teases ‘Beautiful’ Storyline Ahead for Sonny
Benard’s comments appeared on X (formerly Twitter), where he responded to a fan who questioned what GH would be like if the mob disappeared entirely, specifically mentioning Sonny and Jason’s place in organized crime. The fan noted that removing that element could result in the show becoming “an ordinary boring soap.”
“There’s nothing wrong with doing another profession or change as long as both characters still have power,” wrote Benard, the three-time Daytime Emmy winner who has played Sonny since 1993. “And that is the plan.”
The actor followed with an even bigger tease about what the writers have in store for Sonny and Jason.
“I can tell you right now what they have planned in the future is absolutely beautiful,” Benard declared.
Sonny and Jason Leave the Mob
Benard weighing in about what the future holds for Sonny and Jason comes after both characters made major decisions about their future in the Port Charles mafia.
On the Monday, August 3 episode, Jason informed Sonny that he was leaving the mob because he needed to prioritize being a good role model for his motherless teenage son, Danny (Asher Antonyzyn). Jason had worked for Sonny since 1996, making his decision the end of a professional partnership that has been part of GH for decades.
Then, on the Thursday, August 6 episode, Sonny told his firstborn, Dante (Dominic Zamprogna), that he was getting out of the mob, too, and planned to focus on legitimate business opportunities that had opened up after Sidwell’s (Carlo Rota) recent arrest.
Dante was stunned by the revelation and admitted that he never thought he’d see the day his father went legit. As the men shared an emotional hug, Sonny marveled that they could finally have a conversation without him having to hold anything back for fear of compromising Dante’s position with the PCPD.
While Benard did not elaborate about the “absolutely beautiful” story ahead for Sonny as he embarks on a new, post-mob life, his reassurance was good enough for the viewer whose comment sparked his reply. “I trust you Mo!” the user, @Cassadine7, wrote in response, adding, “look forward to anything pro Sonny related!”
