After Sophia goes into labor and gives birth, she makes a decision that promises to change everything. “I can’t let anybody see you, okay?” she tells the wailing newborn swaddled in her arms. And when she shows her face again and Tate asks about the baby’s whereabouts, Sophia begins spinning her web of lies. “The adoptive parents were with me when I gave birth,” she reports. “They wanted to take her home right away. I let them.” However, Javi arrives at the hospital with an infant he found at work. “Whoever’s baby this is, she left him in the safe haven box at the fire station,” he informs Kayla. Could that be Sophia and Tate’s child?

With Johnny arrested for trying to kill EJ, the trial quickly gets underway. “Johnny said his father got what he deserved,” Paulina testifies on the stand as Belle (Martha Madison) questions her. Representing his son, EJ tries to turn the whole trial upside down by getting rid of the opposing counsel entirely. “Ms. Black has a major conflict of interest,” he announces to the court. Things also take a turn when Rachel offers her testimony under Belle’s gentle questioning. “What if Johnny goes to prison because of me?” the little girl later cries as Kristen tries to support her daughter. Rachel might be an eyewitness, but Belle thinks Marlena (Deidre Hall) is clued in to more than she’s letting on. “You know who shot EJ, don’t you?” the attorney asks her mother point-blank.

The Kiriakis family is struggling to hold on to their empire as Xander (Paul Telfer) and Philip continue butting heads. But they’re not the only ones involved in the corporate intrigue. “I’ve spent most of my adult life vying for this top spot,” Brady (Eric Martsolf) grumbles. “We all have.” Stephanie accuses her father, Steve (Stephen Nichols), of investigating the company, but EJ has hired his own mole to dig up the dirt he needs — Gwen Rizczech (Emily O’Brien)! “Find out what he knows,” he orders her, “and stop him.” Alex (Robert Scott Wilson) is concerned that Xander has potentially gotten them into a lot of trouble. “Is there something in those filings that we need to worry about?” he worries. Maggie also decides to take a firm hand where her late husband’s legacy is concerned. “I owe it to my family and to Victor’s memory to stop you,” she declares. Gabi has sided with the DiMeras in the hopes of getting Gabi Chic away from the Kiriakises and goes over their plans with Tony. “So we fight fire with fire?” she asks. Grimly, Tony replies, “We fight fire with arson.” How far will the DiMera go to get what he wants?

Families come together to celebrate a legacy. “With the opening of the Tom Horton Free Clinic,” Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) says on stage as the audience applauds, “my grandfather’s legacy will continue to serve the community.” And at home, Julie assures Maggie: “Once a Horton, always a Horton, dear.” The event will also bring back some familiar faces, such as Mike Horton (Roark Critchlow), Will Horton (Chandler Massey), and more.

Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney) is also back for another visit. “Well, hello, EJ,” she remarks as he looks at her, startled. Marlena is overjoyed to see her daughter back in Salem. “Sami!” she exclaims, as though unable to believe her eyes. Sami’s face crumples with tears as she calls out for her mom and rushes into her arms. “I’ve missed you so much!” she cries. And outside of the Brady Pub with Eric, she remarks, “Where does the time go?”

Relationships are also getting complicated as Sophia’s jealousy of Tate and Holly leads her to plot more schemes to break them up. “Instead of trying to get between the two of them, maybe you need to just let go and move on with your life,” Ari suggests. And when Sarah walks into The Bistro with Brady and spies Gabi planting a kiss on Xander, she sees red. “You can spend your time doing whatever the hell you want,” she bitterly assures her ex-husband. “So can I.” And apparently, that includes planting a kiss on Brady! Speaking of kisses, Chad and Cat share one as well.

There is also danger, and we’re not just talking about Xander angrily punching Brady. “Ari’s missing,” Gabi reports. “She’s been kidnapped.” Who is the masked man locking Holly and Ari in a room, and what does he want? Tate is looking for information, but Doug III isn’t about to tell him anything, and the young men once again come to blows. Also, a Halloween party in Horton Square takes a deadly turn when someone goes on the attack with a knife.

Marlena’s family worries when she collapses in the courtroom during Johnny’s trial. “Mom,” Belle pleads, “Wake up.” In the hospital, Marlena shares, “I had a dream about being Queen of the Night.” That phrase naturally strikes fear into the hearts of many Salem residents. “There’s a reason that Stefano is known as The Phoenix,” Rafe informs Cat (who is also shown asking Charles Shaughnessy’s Shane Donovan, “Why do you need me back at the agency?”). At the DiMera mansion, Anna thinks the whole thing is ridiculous as she shares the news with Tony. “She claims your father’s alive,” she chuckles. Tony smiles as though finding the whole thing silly, but then we see someone in a lab coat outside of what looks like a cryogenic tube as we hear Tony say, “It’s almost time, father.” Could The Phoenix rise again?
