What Happened to Anna on General Hospital? Her Ordeal Explained in Advance of Finola Hughes Return
Since Anna’s last appearance on General Hospital in February, developments involving her escape from a mental health facility, her subsequent recapture, and her deteriorating mental health have played out off-camera, with her loved ones back in Port Charles sharing updates on her condition. With Finola Hughes expected back on the canvas soon, here’s a closer look at where Anna’s storyline stands now.
Mind Games
When Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) and her brother, Nathan (Ryan Paevey) — later revealed to be Nathan’s twin, Cassius — both returned from the dead within a couple months of each other in the summer of 2025, Anna immediately suspected that their father, Cesar Faison, might not actually be as deceased as everyone believed. Despite the notorious supervillain being shot dead in 2018, Anna feared that Faison was somehow back to terrorize her and everyone in Port Charles once more.
Anna was then abducted from her car on Halloween, and in December, she awoke to find herself being held prisoner in a sparsely furnished room. Trying to piece things together, she recalled traveling in a vehicle and then over water while slipping in and out of consciousness. Pascal (Marc Forget) only spoke French when he would check on her, leading Anna to theorize she was somewhere in Europe, unaware she was actually trapped below Wyndemere. An escape attempt was foiled by someone she didn’t see, but was later revealed to be WSB director Ross Cullum (Andrew Hawkes), who was in cahoots with Sidwell (Carlo Rota) to complete Faison’s final cold fusion project.
Anna’s captors then began playing with her mind, giving her drugs that induced hallucinations. In her altered state, she believed that a nurse giving her one of her regular phlebotomy treatments was actually Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati). She then heard Faison’s voice taunting her and had visions of her deceased nephew, Peter August (Wes Ramsey), confronting her before seemingly coming face to face with Cesar himself.

Another Kind of Prison
In early February, Anna was transported to France and made an off-camera escape from her captors. Her granddaughter, Emma (Braedyn Bruner), then received a phone call from the French authorities saying that her grandmother, Anna, had been found by the police in the small town of Dijon and was being held following an altercation with an officer. Emma traveled with Mac (John J. York) and Felicia (Kristina Wagner) to the mental health facility to reunite with Anna, and all of them were shaken when she detailed her ordeal and frantically insisted that Faison was back from the dead. Given Anna’s fragile mental state and erratic behavior, she was forced to remain at the facility for treatment.

Things took a turn in the May 18 episode of GH when Laura (Genie Francis) shared the news that Anna had managed to escape the facility and hijacked a car to get away. She nearly reached Switzerland before being recaptured and was now being transferred to a high-security facility for difficult patients with long-term mental illness. Emma feared that being held in a place like that would only make her grandmother worse, and Laura agreed to try to find a way to bring Anna home.
Opposite this, WSB agent Josslyn (Eden McCoy), who was investigating the connection between Cullum and Faison, found herself being held captive in the same room beneath Wyndemere by Cassius. She discovered that the cell’s previous inhabitant was Anna when she found a message that Anna scrawled on the bedroom wall. Meanwhile, Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) was in hiding after escaping WSB custody, but risked exposure to check on Anna’s condition. Upon learning of her escape attempt and transfer to the new facility, Valentin became determined to rescue his ex-lover and bring her back home.
While no official return date has been given for when Hughes will next be seen on screen, co-star Chris McKenna (Jack) posted on social media in April that the beloved actress was “on her way back” — and GH definitely seems to be setting the stage for Anna’s comeback.
