Is General Hospital’s Jack Playing Carly? Chris McKenna Defends His Character’s Big Lie To Cullum
On the Monday, January 26 episode of General Hospital, Jack Brennan scoffed to his WSB superior, Director Ross Cullum (Andrew Hawkes), that the only reason he had forged a relationship with Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) was to get the goods on her ex-husband, mob boss Sonny Corinthos — a claim that was, in true soap fashion, promptly overheard by Carly’s daughter, Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy)! But is Brennan’s romance with Carly really all an act? His portrayer, Chris McKenna, took to social media clarify his character’s true intentions.
Caught In A Bad Romance?
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), McKenna sought to set the record straight about what Jack said to Cullum. “If Jack was faking his feelings for Carly why would he be fake crying and being brokenhearted all year when there are no witnesses?” the actor posed. “There would also be no stakes with these sl’s [storylines].” He continued, “Sorry, guys. I know some folks WANT Jack to be faking. But the show has made it unequivocally clear he ain’t.”
As proof, McKenna went on to remind viewers of how his character laid his feelings bare to Carly “while she was unconscious and no one there to witness [it],” referring to scenes that took place in the hospital early in 2025 when Carly had to fight for her life after being poisoned with polonium. At the time those scenes aired, McKenna was likewise confident that Jack’s deep concern and even deeper feelings for Carly were genuine, telling Digest, “When he talks to her at her bedside, Jack’s hardened exterior starts to crumble even further, and [you] see parts of Jack you haven’t seen before.”

Replying to a fan who commented on his post, McKenna shared that he wasn’t surprised that the scene between Brennan and Cullum sparked so much fan conversation online about whether Jack was putting on a show or telling the WSB director the truth about where he stands with Carly. “When I saw the way they edited it I knew it would,” he noted, explaining, “It was clear as day Jack was putting on a show when we shot it. But with the camera distant it wasn’t as obvious.” As for how believable Jack sounded in being so dismissive about his bond with his lover, McKenna went on to observe that in his line of work, “Jack has to be an exceptional actor.”
In an interview with Digest shortly after he assumed the role, McKenna emphasized that his character’s long history with the WSB made falling in love with Carly such a dangerous prospect for the agent. “Jack has been in the WSB for decades, which means he’s got darkness in him,” he pointed out. “He’s had to do terrible things. He’s had to harden himself. He’s got scars on his soul. And that’s what makes the stakes so high, and what makes the romance so much fun and so delicious, because if someone can get through that and get to his heart, then he’s in for the fight of his life! So, it’s really fun to do that, and we’re having a blast plumbing this whole relationship and we have a unique chemistry.”
Of course, Brennan’s WSB duties are also at the heart of the current drama currently playing out, which seems poised to blow Jack and Carly’s relationship to smithereens. Jack has been harboring a huge secret, one Carly viewers as a major breach of trust, which is that he recruited Joss to become a WSB agent and has been lying to her face for the entire time they’ve been lovers. Rather than confront him about it when she found out about his deception from Jason, Carly has instead been covertly plotting his downfall with an unlikely ally: fugitive Valentin (James Patrick Stuart).
McKenna tells Digest that with these massive obstacles standing in the way of a happily-ever-after for the duo, Jack and Carly’s future seems “bleak” — but that he is rooting for them to overcome them. “There’s still quite a few [Jack/Carly supporters] that are hanging on to hope that it’ll blow over one way or another eventually, and you can put me in that camp,” he says. “Even if there’s some time apart, I think Jack and Carly still have more story to be told together.” After all, given what other soap couples have made it through in the past, he winks, “This is barely an inconvenience in the grand scheme of things!”
