General Hospital’s Anna Devane Returns: Finola Hughes’ First Airdate Revealed
General Hospital heroine Anna Devane will make her triumphant return to the airwaves on Wednesday, June 24, Soap Opera Digest has confirmed. Finola Hughes, who began playing the beloved character of Anna in 1985, has been absent from the screen since February.
Anna Devane Returns
When Anna last appeared, she was in a psychiatric facility in France, undergoing treatment after Cullum (Andrew Hawkes) pumped her with hallucinogenic drugs. Cullum’s goal was to prevent Anna from derailing the dangerous cold fusion project he and Sidwell (Carlo Rota) were scrambling to complete, which had originally been the handiwork of Anna’s longtime enemy, the late Cesar Faison (Anders Hove).
While Anna has been hospitalized in France, her loved ones have been deeply concerned about her mental state, and in May, Laura (Genie Francis) broke the news to Anna’s granddaughter, Emma (Braedyn Bruner), that the cunning Ms. Devane had escaped and nearly made it all the way to Switzerland before being recaptured. As a result, she had been transferred to a higher-security facility. But Congresswoman Willow Cain (Katelyn MacMullen) agreed to advocate for Anna and got her moved to a less restrictive institution. And when Anna is seen again on Wednesday, June 24, GH teasers say that she will be meeting with her doctors.
Anna’s Dramatic Summer
In Digest‘s exclusive GH summer preview, Head Writers Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten revealed several juicy tidbits related to Anna’s upcoming story. They teased that Anna “has the goods on Cassius [Ryan Paevey] but struggles to get the word out while institutionalized in France” and that fans would “begin to see the long-term effects of her imprisonment and gaslighting at Cullum’s [Andrew Hawkes] hands.” They cautioned,” Any happy reunions with friends and family are colored by counsel from a less-than-reliable source. We’ll see echoes of Anna’s earliest incarnation as she returns to Port Charles with deadly intentions.”
But in the summer preview, Anna was also mentioned in conjunction with other storylines across the canvas, including the burgeoning romance of Anna’s former lover, Valentin (James Patrick Stuart), and Carly (Laura Wright). Korte and Van Etten mused that Valentin and Carly’s future is “at the mercy of the WSB… as well as the multitude of people back in Port Charles who can’t stand Valentin… and one who can – Anna Devane.”
Korte and Van Etten also noted that Anna’s “return to Port Charles means Rocco [Finn Carr] isn’t yet out of the woods for shooting Cullum” and that Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) would face some hard questions from Ms. Devane — and that a major decision made by another returning fan favorite, Jason Morgan (Steve Burton), would have “big implications” for Anna.
