General Hospital’s Laura Wright On Carly, Valentin & Anna Triangle and ‘The Power of Finola’ (Excl)
Carly and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) are facing a lot of obstacles in their unlikely romance on General Hospital — and that’s before Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) is physically back in the mix as a potential spoiler to her ex’s new romantic entanglement. Laura Wright, who plays Carly, tells Soap Opera Digest that she is getting a huge kick out of the unique triangle of sorts.
The Power of Three
Valentin and Carly started sleeping together after she began hiding the international fugitive in her attic, and she has been less than thrilled that he’s been risking exposure by calling France for updates on Anna, who was institutionalized there after being pumped with hallucinogenic drugs by her evil captors. She’s also had a front-row seat to the obvious pain he feels over the predicament his former lover is in. But the situation got even more emotionally fraught after Valentin learned that Anna has been transferred to a high-security facility following an escape attempt and announced his intention to go abroad to break her free.
“When he says, ‘I’m going to France to save Anna,’ Carly is like, ‘Are you freaking kidding me right now?!'” chuckles Wright. “She’s like, ‘But what about me? What about our situation?'”
On the May 20 episode, Carly and Valentin were in the midst of having this very fight when she suggested that he was still in love with Anna — but before he could respond, they were interrupted by a visit from his daughter, Charlotte (Bluesy Burke), and Danny (Asher Antonyzyn). But says Wright, that lingering question about Anna “comes back around and does get completely addressed — very emotionally.”
As close as Valentin and Carly have gotten, Wright clearly doesn’t think her alter ego should underestimate what James Patrick Stuart described to Digest as Valentin’s “continued fascination with Anna.” The actress exclaims, “I think it’s really funny that we have a full-on love triangle with Anna and she’s not even there! That’s the power of Finola, first of all, and that’s how powerful the Valentin and Anna love story was, that we’re able to still have an emotional love triangle without her even being on the canvas. How amazing is that?!”
While GH has not confirmed a return air date for Hughes, who last appeared on screen in February, Chris McKenna (Brennan) assured fans on X (formerly Twitter) in April that the veteran actress was “on her way back” to the Port Charles fold.
