General Hospital Alum Kimberly McCullough Joins Romy and Michele Sequel
General Hospital alum Kimberly McCullough (ex-Robin Scorpio-Drake) is adding another impressive notch to her post-Port Charles resume: She has signed on as a co-producer of the hotly anticipated sequel to the 1997 cult-hit comedy Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, which will once again star Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the sequel has already begun shooting with Tim Federle at the helm as director. Federly was the creator of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, the Disney+ show where McCullough worked as both a director and executive producer. “Congratulations, Tim Federle!!!” she cheered on Instagram. “Honored and excited to be by your side once again creating something truly special.”
McCullough shared that she also felt a connection to the material because “Time after Time,” the Cyndi Lauper song featured in the climax of the original Romy and Michele, reminds her of her beloved dog, Jack, who recently passed away. She wrote, “It’s also not lost on me that the song Romy and Michele dance to in the original is my song for Jack. I can’t help but think he might be behind the scenes doing a little bit of his magic.”
The comment section on McCullough’s post filled with congratulatory messages from fans and friends, including several of her former GH castmates. Jason Thompson (ex-Patrick, now Billy on The Young and the Restless) shared an applause emoji and wrote: “Keep going,” while TV mom Finola Hughes (Anna) declared, “Excited for this!!!” “This is wonderful!” echoed Kent Masters King (ex-Lainey).
McCullough began her career as a child actor and was only 7 years old when she was cast as Robin in 1985. She played Robin on and off through 2021, earning two Daytime Emmy Awards, one for Outstanding Ingenue in a Drama Series in 1989 and the other for Outstanding Younger Actress in 1996. She began a full-time transition to behind-the-camera work in 2012 and has built a successful directing — and now producing — career. In addition to High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, she has helmed episodes of Pretty Little Liars, One Day at a Time, The Connors, Fantasy Island, How I Met Your Father, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and more.
The original Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion was written by Robin Schiff, who has returned to pen the sequel. He also scripted a prequel, Romy and Michele: In the Beginning, which aired on ABC Family in 2005 and starred Katherine Heigl and Alexandra Breckinridge as the titular characters.
Joining Kudrow and Sorvino from the original film are returning actors Janeane Garofalo as Heather, Alan Cumming as Sandy Frink, Camryn Manheim as Toby and Julia Campbell as Christie. New additions to the sequel’s cast include Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton and Nathan Lee Graham. Details of their roles, as well as the actual plot of the sequel, are still being kept a secret.
While Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion was a theatrical release, the still-untitled sequel will stream exclusively as a Hulu Original. There is currently no release date scheduled.
