The duo got engaged, but Bill called off the wedding and left town. Laura rebounded with Bill’s brother, Mickey, and they married in 1968. The following year, Bill returned and, in a drunken state, raped Laura and impregnated her. Laura passed off Bill’s son, Mike, as Mickey’s child for years, while remaining torn between the brothers. When Mickey suffered a stroke in 1973 and lost his memory, he fled Salem, leaving Laura free to be with Bill. Mickey was eventually found and granted Laura a divorce so he could be with new love Maggie, paving the way for Laura and Bill to wed in 1975. However, the twisted triangle didn’t wrap until Mike’s paternity was exposed, when he needed a blood transfusion and Bill was his only match. Mickey realized his son was really Bill’s and shot his brother in 1976; he survived.

The couple’s budding romance was derailed when Steve pushed Kayla into the arms of a terminally ill, Kayla-besotted Jack after finding out that Jack was actually his brother, who had been given up for adoption.
