The Young and the Restless: Why Dr. Laurence Markham Is Holding Diane Captive
Diane (Susan Walters) has been missing on The Young and the Restless — and now we know why. On the June 15 episode, she wakes up trapped inside Dr. Laurence Markham’s (Jere Burns) house, with no phone, locked doors and windows, and no clear way out. But while Diane fights to prove she’s not having a “breakdown,” Markham and Patty (Stacy Haiduk) are working a disturbing plan that could keep her from Jack (Peter Bergman) for good.
Missing in Action
At the Chancellor Park Cafe, Patty met with Dr. Markham, who assured her everything went to plan, and she passed him some money. When Traci (Beth Maitland) and Jack later confronted her alone, Patty claimed that the man was the doctor who made her a changed woman. Traci wasn’t buying it, and neither was Jack, who was convinced that Patty had something to do with Diane’s disappearance.
Meanwhile, Diane woke up in a strange house and staggered out into the living room, holding her head and calling out to see if anyone else was there. After confirming that she was alone, she lamented not having her phone and discovered that not only did the house not have a landline, but all the doors and windows were locked. Looking around for clues, Diane was shaken to see a shelf full of books written by Alan Laurent, the psychiatrist who helped treat Ashley (Eileen Davidson) before his psychotic twin brother, Martin, killed him and assumed his identity.

After Diane failed in her efforts to use a letter opener to force open the lock, the front door opened and Laurence entered. As she brandished the tool in self-defense, he smiled that she was looking a lot better than when she first arrived. Diane demanded to leave, but he explained that he was a psychiatrist and she needed to remain here, in his private residence, while he assessed her current mental state following her breakdown and decided where she should go next.
Diane insisted that she’d never had any kind of breakdown and simply wanted to go home. Laurence returned with some tea and took a sip to show her it was safe. He claimed that he’d found her in her car on the side of the road, screaming, so he’d called the police — and her husband, who agreed she needed treatment. “‘Do whatever you have to do to make her better,’ is what he said,” Laurence lied. Diane found the whole story insane and protested that none of it was true. When Laurence continued claiming she needed treatment, Diane argued that if her condition was so dire, she should be in a professional facility with nurses and staff. “I don’t want to stay in this place another minute!” she snapped. “Let me leave. Now!”
Let’s Make a Deal
Meanwhile, Patty showed up at the Abbott manse to show Jack a photo of Diane asleep in bed, and he demanded to know what she had done to his wife. Patty claimed that Diane had snapped and suffered a mental breakdown, but was getting the help she needed. She urged him to let his wife go and warned that after Diane was treated, she’d be a changed woman and wouldn’t come back to him. Jack was horrified as Patty cooed that now that he was single, they could finally be together.
