General Hospital Comings & Goings: Why Ethan’s Latest Port Charles Run Ended When It Did

Comments

General Hospital‘s Ethan Lovett made his final appearance on the Tuesday, August 4 episode, Soap Opera Digest can confirm. In his last appearance, the character was played by Christian Howard, who subbed in for Nathan Dean for several episodes beginning on Monday, July 27.

Nathan Dean’s GH Return Was Always Short-Term

Dean, who created the role of Ethan in 2009, returned to the show on April 17, 2026 after a six-year absence from GH. In advance of his first episode, the actor shared with TV Insider that when he first began negotiating his comeback, the show had hoped to sign him to a three-year deal, but he had balked at the length of that commitment. Explained Dean, “I said, ‘I can’t do three years. There’s a lot going on in my personal life. I need to be home with my wife and all this stuff, so can’t do three years, can’t do two years.’ So, we agreed to do these next four months.”

Dean’s decision not to ink a multiyear contract with the show came as he and wife Katey were preparing to welcome their new addition; the couple announced in March that they were expecting a baby.

To many viewers, Ethan’s latest departure from Port Charles felt abrupt. The character had just hit the sheets for the first time with Ava Jerome (Maura West) and was sitting on a major secret — the true paternity of baby Phoebe (Lucia and Luna Creighton), who Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) and Chase (Josh Swickard) were poised to adopt — when he saw Port Charles newcomer Hudson (Troy Lennon Appel) on the Metro Court pool deck. In short order, he informed his sister Lulu (Alexa Havins) that he was leaving town, leaving her — and fans — in the dark about his connection to the recent arrival.

But that turned out not to be Ethan’s final appearance. When he popped up again on August 4, he had made his way to Oslo, Norway — and Hudson caught up to him there. He demanded answers about the fate of Phoebe’s mother, Delilah (Lily Cardone), and Ethan told him both a truth — Delilah had died — and a lie: that the baby had, too. Hudson hissed that Ethan was a thief who had “stolen from the wrong man” and beat him, threatening to go after Ethan’s family if he discovered that he had lied.

After Hudson left, Ethan dialed up Ava, imploring her never to reveal that he was not Phoebe’s biological father. Unbeknownst to him, Hudson heard this juicy bit of news, since he had planted a bug Ethan’s hotel room.

A source at GH tells Soap Opera Digest that Ethan’s short-term storyline was always designed to wrap up this way — but “the door is open for Ethan to return to Port Charles” in the future.
