General Hospital Exclusive: Finn Carr Reveals Unscripted Rocco Moment That Made It to Air

Comments

Rocco has been on edge ever since he shot Cullum (Andrew Hawkes) and Jason (Steve Burton) took the fall. On the May 19 episode, Rocco lashed out in frustration, leading to a moment that was not in the script, his portrayer Finn Carr tells Soap Opera Digest.

Pillow Talk

Rocco has been under immense stress for months now, unable to come forward about shooting the WSB director to stop him from doing away with Jason and Britt (Kelly Thiebaud). His dad, Dante (Dominic Zamprogna), figured out the truth, but that’s only given Rocco new reason to worry. Carr explains, “His dad is very loving to him and very accepting when he finds out what Rocco did, which is good — but it’s also bad because it means the police commissioner is now covering up a crime. That’s just another thing that could go wrong if the wrong person finds out, so Rocco is even more stressed out!”

At the same time, Rocco has been forced to lie to Danny (Asher Antonyzyn) and Charlotte (Bluesy Burke) about what really happened that night on the pier, which made it difficult for him to convince the duo to abort their mission to sneak into Wyndemere to get the goods on Sidwell (Carlo Rota) and hopefully clear Jason’s name. “All he could do is try to come up with a lot of different reasons they shouldn’t do it and use a lot of strong emotions to try to convince them without being able to tell them the real reason why,” Carr notes.

And when Danny and Charlotte decide to head to Spoon Island anyway, Carr continues, “He is very scared that they’re going to get themselves hurt or in big trouble, so he gets very frustrated and throws a pillow,” which he grabbed off the nearest couch at the Quartermaine mansion.

That bit of physicality was actually the brainstorm of GH Executive Producer Frank Valentini. “Frank likes to add a lot of fun physicality between me and [props] on the set or me and the other actors, like when Rocco spilled juice on his bandaged hand,” Carr reports. “So at the end of the scenes where I’m trying and trying to convince Danny and Charlotte not to go to the island, he said, ‘Rocco’s very frustrated after this. Have him throw the pillow at the wall.'”

Just one problem: “I have terrible aim,” Carr groans. “I’m a swimmer and a rock climber. I’ve never been good at throwing balls. So, I completely missed my target area — my massive target area — of the wall! It hit the one area I wasn’t supposed to hit, which was the chessboard and the vase on the table in front of the wall.” He hurled the cushion with such force, the actor recalls, “that I broke the vase on impact with my pillow! That was completely accidental, not in the script at all.”

Luckily, he grins, “I stayed in character throughout the take, so it ended up working out for the scene. But it was definitely a crazy experience!”
