General Hospital: Who Was the Rock Star Anna Dated? The Wild Tale of Eli Love
In the August 13 episode of General Hospital, Anna (Finola Hughes) told her granddaughter, Emma (Braedyn Bruner), that she once went out with a musician. The rock star in question? Eli Love, played by real-life musician/actor Rick Springfield, who took on the role in 2007 and 2008 while also playing his signature GH character, Dr. Noah Drake. Here’s how the tale unfolded.
How Anna Devane Met Eli Love
In July 2007, a patient was brought into G.H. with a possible brain embolism, and everyone was stunned to see how much he resembled Noah. The look-alike, a rock star named Eli, refused brain surgery because he was due to perform at an AIDS fundraiser.
Anna, a huge fan of Eli Love, was thrilled to meet the musician in the flesh. When Noah’s son, Dr. Patrick Drake (Jason Thompson), came up with the idea of Noah saving the charity concert by posing as Eli during the performance, it was Anna who persuaded Eli to undergo the life-saving operation he needed — and she also coached Noah in Eli’s performance style so he could convincingly portray him on stage.
After Eli’s operation, Anna was so pleased by the sight of the recovering musician that she planted a kiss on him (and was immediately embarrassed). Meanwhile, Noah sustained an injury to his vocal chords and lost his ability to sing at the worst possible time: the night of the concert.
Upon learning the news, Eli insisted on performing himself, but wasn’t strong enough following his surgery. So Anna arranged a compromise: Noah lip synched on stage while Eli sang live backstage, hidden from the audience!
Why Anna Broke Up with Eli on GH
Anna made another visit to Port Charles in 2008 — one she cut short to fly to Rio to join Eli on tour. When she next returned to town, Eli soon followed — but with her daughter, Robin Scorpio (Kimberly McCullough), expecting a baby with Patrick, Anna worried how Eli would react to her becoming a grandmother.
When Eli discovered the truth, he claimed not to care. “You’re the most amazing, kick-ass woman I have ever met,” he professed. “You connect with me. You connect with my music. Why would I walk away from that just because your daughter gets herself knocked up?”
Alas, Eli soon showed his true colors. First, he denied to a reporter that Anna was his girlfriend, claiming that his real paramour was on her way from Sydney. Patrick slugged the singer to defend Anna’s honor. Eli was rushed to the hospital and given a clean bill of health, then invited Anna out to dinner. However, he asked her not to leave the hospital with him to protect his “image.” Anna was also totally turned off by how callously Eli treated a groupie named Trish who had given birth to his son, Elijah.
Anna told Robin in August that she was totally done with Eli, calling their involvement a “worthless detour.” Soon, she took up with the man she claimed Eli had just been a substitution for: Noah. That relationship also ultimately fizzled.
