Did a General Hospital Retcon Set Up Jason and Britt’s Breakup?
General Hospital may have given Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) and Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud) a conflict big enough to break them up — by rewriting what Britt knew about Anna’s captivity at Cullum’s (Andrew Hawkes) hands.
General Hospital Retcons What Britt Knew About Anna
In the Tuesday, September 8 episode, Jason tried to convince a gun-wielding Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) that Britt was not a threat to him. “I wasn’t working with Cullum,” insisted Britt. “I was his pawn! I was trying to stop him!”
Anna wasn’t buying it. “Don’t lie!” she snarled, accusing Britt of knowing she was being held hostage and tortured by Cullum and Cassius (Ryan Paevey), Britt’s brother, “and you did nothing!”
Jason declared that Britt hadn’t known that Cullum had taken Anna hostage. And he believed what he told Anna next, that Cullum was focused on getting Britt to finish Faison’s (Anders Hove) cold fusion project and had kept her in the dark about his other nefarious activities.
As Anna trained her gun on her, a panicked Britt turned to Jason and revealed that she hadn’t known that Anna was on Spoon Island — that is, “until Cullum showed up in Port Charles.”
Jason looked shocked and confused by the revelation — and it’s easy to see why. On screen, Britt was never shown as having any knowledge of Anna’s presence under Wyndemere. If anything, the show was careful to establish Britt’s ignorance: By the time she began making regular visits to Spoon Island to work on Faison’s project in the secret lab at Wyndemere, Cullum had relocated Anna to France.
But now, it appears that has been retconned — and if Britt had known that Anna was being held hostage all the way back in January and had kept it a secret from Jason, that could prove very sticky for the lovebirds. In fact, it could be an enormous problem. After all, trust matters a lot to Jason — and so does Anna.
And with the immediate threat behind them — in the Wednesday, September 9 episode, Jason successfully talked Anna down and stopped her from shooting Britt — Britt and Jason now have to reckon with that revelation and its potential impact on their relationship.
In their fall preview interview with TV Insider, General Hospital‘s co-head writers, Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten, gave fans reason to believe that Jason and Britt may be headed for a breakup. “Decisions Britt made to stay alive while under Cullum’s thumb will come back to haunt her,” they said, “and may prove too difficult for this unlikely couple to survive.”
This retcon — and with it, Jason potentially seeing Britt in a new and not-so-favorable light, would seem to fit the bill.
