Steve Burton (Jason Morgan): As Burton’s return date — Monday, July 13 — draws near, the actor spoke out about what the writers have planned for Jsaon upon his return to Port Charles, saying, “We’re shifting directions a little bit, which is gonna be interesting for fans.”

Michael Ocampo (Gus): The actor, who debuted in May, returns this week as Javi’s (Jacob Martinz) new squeeze.

Jacob Martinez (Javi Hernandez): Martinez, whose casting was announced back in April, is finally debuting this week in the role previously played by Al Calderon. The actor, a Nebraska native who came out as gay when he was 22, told Out, “Javi is the kind of character I wish I could have looked up to on television as a kid. Getting the chance to hopefully be that inspiration for another kid somewhere in a small town makes it all worthwhile.” He copped to have major first-day jitters, saying, “I may not remember my first few scenes because I essentially blacked out from nerves.”

John Oliver (Character Name TBA): The Emmy-winning talk show host and comedian is heading to Salem! Oliver will appear on three episodes, starting on August 11, and his yet-to-be-revealed alter ego will share scenes with (Dan Feuerriegel). Oliver will also appear on GH (see below) after both DAYS and GH reached out to him in the wake of him issuing a plea on his HBO talk show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, to be cast on a soap. “When John Oliver said, ‘Call me soaps, I’m available and willing to travel. I want to be a part of that world,’ our world, we had to heed the call!” Executive Producer Ken Corday enthused in a statement.

Bluesy Burke (Charlotte Cassadine): Charlotte and Lulu (Alexa Havins) pay a visit to Laura (Genie Francis) on Tuesday, June 23.

Kathleen Gati (Liesl Obrecht): A captive Liesl has been hard at work completing Britt’s (Kelly Thiebaud) work on the cold fusion prototype. She delivers an update on her progress to Josslyn (Eden McCoy) on Tuesday, June 30.

Andrew Hawkes (Ross Cullum): Cullum believes that he’s close to getting the prototype for the cold fusion project online — which makes him a danger to several Port Charles residents this week.

Matt Merchant (WSB Agent Harker): Agent Harker makes more trouble around Port Charles this week.

John Oliver (Character Name TBA): GH fans will meet Oliver’s top-secret new character — one ABC is calling a “significant guest role” — on Thursday, July 2. The celebrated comedian will appear in three episodes overall. Said Executive Producer Frank Valentini in a statement, nodding to the segment Oliver did on his show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, about wanting to be on a soap, “When John Oliver publicly threw down the gauntlet and said he wanted to appear on a soap, we didn’t hesitate for a second. He was everything you’d hope he’d be: prepared, professional, funny, and genuinely kind to everyone on set. He plays an integral character in the story, and I can’t wait for fans to see who he crosses paths within Port Charles.”

Oliver said in the same statement, “General Hospital was everything I hoped it would be. It’s a true honor to be a small stain on the history of this illustrious show.”

Jere Burns (Dr. Laurence Markham): Diane (Susan Walters) spends more time — against her will — with Patty’s (Stacy Haiduk) partner in crime.

Vivica A. Fox (Dr. Stephanie Simmons): Stephanie has a conversation with Nate (Sean Dominic) about his past on Thursday, July 2.

Stacy Haiduk (Patty Williams): Expect a dramatic week for Patty, as Jack (Peter Bergman) sets a trap for her beginning on Wednesday, July 1.

Roger Howarth (Matt Clark): Matt has a tense encounter with Nick (Joshua Morrow) and Noah (Lucas Adams) on Thursday, July 2.

Lauren Koslow (Jill Abbott): When Jess Walton was unavailable to film the episodes Y&R scripted for Jill that air this week, they turned to Koslow, who plays Kate on DAYS and who previously appeared on Y&R as Lindsey Wells. The actress spoke out about pinch-hitting for Walton, noting that she sought to “honor Jess and her performance.”

Beth Maitland (Traci Abbott): Traci and Kyle (Michael Mealor) put their heads together on the subject of Patty on Tuesday, June 30.

Industry News

Y&R is undergoing a major behind-the-scenes shakeup as Head Writer Josh Griffith is exiting the show. While he will remain in the position for now, as the show has yet to name his successor, Y&R’s cast and crew were informed of Griffith’s decision to step down from his creative duties in an email that went out on June 26. Griffith had also been the show’s co-executive producer until recently, but in recent months, he chose to give up that title to focus on his writing work. Griffith’s current run as head writer began in 2019.

Alumni Report

Shemar Moore (ex-Malcolm, Y&R) is heading to Starz! The network will be the home of Moore’s S.W.A.T. spinoff, S.W.A.T. Exiles, which is set to premiere on Friday, September 25…. Chad Duell (ex-Michael, GH) has dropped the first single of his new music career, explaining on Instagram, “I’ve wanted to make music for a long time… I just never did it.” He added, “This first release is more of a dance/EDM vibe, but I’ve also been working on a lot of different styles behind the scenes that I’m just as excited about.
