On March 26, 1973, the face of daytime changed forever when CBS introduced The Young and the Restless to its lineup. Created by the legendary William J. Bell and Lee Philip Bell, the Wisconsin-set soap originally focused on two families — the mega-rich Brooks clan and the working-class Fosters. Most of the show’s original characters were phased out by the early 1980s, with the notable exceptions of the wealthy and troubled Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper) and the scheming Jill Foster (then Brenda Dickson, now Jess Walton), and the storyline wealth was spread to new players and new families, including the Newmans, the Abbotts and the Winterses, who remain at the forefront today.

In its early years, the show distinguished itself from the rest of the soaps on the air with lush sets, innovative lighting and a focus on younger characters — ones who showed far more skin than daytime fans were used to seeing! Stars who got their start on the show include David Hasselhoff (ex-Snapper), Tom Selleck (ex-Jed), the late Paul Walker (ex-Brandon), Shemar Moore (who is soon returning as Malcolm), Penn Badgley (ex-Phillip IV) and Eva Longoria (ex-Isabella).

Y&R has been the top-rated daytime drama for over 30 years, and has earned 11 Daytime Emmys for Best Show. In its current cast, a whopping 14 actors have won Daytime Emmys for their work on Y&R, and 14 actors — Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki), Eric Braeden (Victor), Michael Damian (Danny), Eileen Davidson (Ashley), Beth Maitland (Traci), Kate Linder (Esther), Tracey E. Bregman (Lauren), Lauralee Bell (Christine), Jess Walton, Peter Bergman (Jack), Christian J. LeBlanc (Michael), Joshua Morrow (Nick) and Michelle Stafford (Phyllis) made their Genoa City debuts over 30 years ago.

In celebration of the show’s 53rd birthday, we’re looking back at some of the most unforgettable and iconic moments in Genoa City history.
