LIVE AND LEARN: Christopher Sean (Paul, DAYS) is happy to be working with Chandler Massey, who recently returned as Will. “I’m truly blessed,” Sean says. “I’ve learned a lot. Every time I work with someone, I try to understand and learn their technique, and understand why and how they got to where they’re at, and with Chandler, it’s really amazing how present this guy is. When you work with him, his main goal is to just get a reaction from you. Sometimes he just makes things up on the fly, and you’re caught on your heels and you just have to react, and that’s what’s amazing about him. He makes the scene come to life. I really like working with Chandler.” As for the dynamic with Freddie Smith (Sonny), Sean cracks, “I don’t talk to either of them. We physically fight every time we see each other. The crew has to pull us apart. No, actually, they’re great. We joke, we laugh, we hang out.”
WORRIED FOR NOTHING: Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth, GH) says that one of the storylines she most fretted over was the return of the character who had raped Liz as a teen, Tom Baker. “To be honest, I was nervous about the Tom Baker story being brought back [when he was paroled in 2016] because I was conflicted over how Elizabeth would feel about it,” the actress explains. “It made me nervous because, of course, I knew that the fans would want to see Elizabeth’s turmoil over what she dealt with from being raped, but then I also felt like Elizabeth has gone through all of these steps to heal and she has become a whole person, and I would hope that she would know how to deal with these feelings and face this challenge in a healthy way and not slip back to where she was 15 years ago. So, that story did make me nervous because I just wasn’t quite sure; I didn’t really know what to do with it.” For better or worse, Tom’s comeback was short-lived (because he was offed by his brother). “I didn’t even really have time to come to a conclusion about how Elizabeth felt!” she chuckles. “It came and went so quickly that I didn’t really have to decide. He was here and gone in what felt like a week!”
OUT TO LUNCH: Thorsten Kaye (Ridge, B&B) started his career in the theater, and while he says he is always in the moment onstage, there was one performance he wishes he could forget. “I was playing Macbeth and I was in black leather, blood on my face, all tough-looking and I was so into it,” he recalls. “I remember it was a matinee in Detroit [at the Hilberry Theatre circa 1993], and I walked out on the stage, ready to show everybody how wonderful I am, and I catch this woman in the front row with this white thing on her lap. I was thinking to myself, ‘This woman brought an animal in here?’ Well, it wasn’t an animal. It was a big sandwich! It was a foot-long and she was just sitting there eating it — and in seeing this, I forgot every single word of dialogue. I was just standing there, and I had nothing. It was one of those scary moments where you have to run backstage and look at the script until you get to that moment again. It was probably only about a minute, but to me, it seemed like a half-hour [laughs].”
FAMILY REUNION: Jason Thompson (Billy, Y&R; ex-Patrick, GH) credits his close ties with former TV daughter Brooklyn Rae Silzer (ex-Emma, GH) with prepping him for fatherhood. “I spent a lot of time with Brooklyn and it was a lot of back and forth, a lot of conversation and a lot of trusting,” he says. “We went through some pretty heavy storylines, so she’s a strong girl, but she has such a softness and she’s very sweet. I think that boys, men, can learn a lot from women and girls. My relationship with Brooklyn really helped me understand that kids are their own people as soon as they come out, and sometimes you have to get out of the way and let them tell you and show you what they need. I want to give my kids the equal amount of support and love. Who knows, maybe [daughter] Rome will be a hockey player and [son] Bowie will dance in the ballet.” Thompson still enjoys getting together with the young actress. “We met in Santa Monica recently for an afternoon at the beach,” he explains. “It was Brooklyn, her little sister, Londyn, their mom, [my wife] Paloma and Bowie and Rome. We all hung out and had some lunch. It was a really nice time.”
