The Young and the Restless: Matt Clark’s Revenge is ‘Just Getting Started,’ Says Roger Howarth
Matt’s plan to take revenge on Nick (Joshua Morrow) and the rest of the Newman family on Young and Restless has reached a fever pitch after he lured both Nick and Adam (Mark Grossman) to an abandoned gas station in the Las Vegas desert using Sharon (Sharon Case) and Noah (Lucas Adams) as bait. In a new interview with TV Insider, Roger Howarth reflected on the depths of Matt’s villainy and teased that the Newmans should prepare for the worst.
Pure Evil
Nick and Adam traveled to Vegas to track Matt down, only to find themselves and several of their loved ones in grave danger. In the April 27 episode, Nick passed out from the bad batch of drugs he’d taken earlier (also Matt’s handiwork) and passed out while attempting to rescue Sharon and Noah, who had been chained to a wall by the diabolical Matt. “Matt is in full-on destructive, rageful mode,” Howarth previewed. “He’s just getting started with the Newmans, and his plans to scorch the earth include every one of them in no particular order. He feels very confident that things are going to go his way, but life always has a way of interfering with plans.”
Matt has been gunning for the Newmans on and off for decades now, and according to Howarth, that isn’t likely to change soon. “He’s triggered and stays in this headspace of constant conflict,” the actor mused. “I don’t think he spends a lot of time in his best self.”
But that works just fine for Howarth, who is embracing the challenge of bringing Matt’s villainy to life. “I trust the writing and I think that the writers have a clear vision of who this guy is,” the actor shared, praising the show’s executive producer/head writer, Josh Griffith, for having a “really good understanding of the darker parts of humanity and how they intermesh with the classic soap villains.”
Matt is not the Daytime Emmy-winning actor’s first rodeo as a soap villain, and he played his best-known role, antihero Todd Manning on One Life to Live and General Hospital on and off for decades. When asked if he’d like to continue playing Matt, he replied, “I really hope so. That would be really fun.” He even hinted that even a character like Matt might not be beyond redemption, posing, “Is it possible for person to change? It’s a really valuable question, and as an actor, it’s such a pleasure to think about those things.”
