The Young and the Restless: Is Dr. Laurence Markham Really Psycho Martin Laurent?

Comments

When Dr. Laurence Markham (Jere Burns) first appeared on The Young and the Restless holding Diane (Susan Walters) hostage as part of a scheme with Patty (Stacy Haiduk), viewers quickly realized the psychiatrist was not the helpful doctor he claimed to be. But some fans have been wondering if Markham could have an even bigger connection to Genoa City’s past — and if he might actually be Martin Laurent (Christopher Cousins).

The Clues That Have Fans Wondering

When Diane woke up in a strange house in the June 15 episode, she found herself trapped by Dr. Markham, who claimed he was helping her recover from the emotional breakdown she suffered after learning that Jack (Peter Bergman) had cheated on her with Patty. In reality, Markham was working with Patty, who wanted Diane out of the way so she could pursue Jack without interference.

While Patty’s history of schemes and crimes is well known, viewers have been left wondering whether Markham has secrets of his own. And a few details about the mysterious doctor have caught fans’ attention.

While searching Markham’s home, Diane discovered a shelf filled with books authored by Dr. Alan Laurent, the psychiatrist who helped Ashley (Eileen Davidson) during her struggle with dissociative identity disorder in 2024. Alan also had a twin brother, Martin — and during the June 22 episode, Markham revealed that his zodiac sign is Gemini, which represents the twins.

That detail immediately raised eyebrows among fans who remember Martin Laurent’s history.

Could Martin Laurent Have Returned?

During the storyline that unfolded in 2024-25, it was revealed that Martin had always been jealous of his twin, Alan, and believed himself to be the superior psychiatrist. After a confrontation between the brothers, Martin was presumed dead — but he had actually survived and later stole Alan’s identity.

Posing as Alan, Martin wooed Traci (Beth Maitland) while holding Sharon (Sharon Case) and Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) prisoner as part of a twisted psychological experiment. Eventually, his crimes were exposed, and Martin was arrested.

But could Martin have somehow returned to Genoa City with a new identity?

Some fans have theorized that Markham could be Martin in disguise, possibly having changed his appearance and reinvented himself — much like Patty once got a new face to move freely around Genoa City as Mary Jane Benson. While there has been no confirmation that the two characters are connected, the similarities have been enough to get viewers talking.

The theory gained another interesting wrinkle when Traci encountered Laurence and immediately seemed suspicious of him. Could her reaction be connected to her painful history with Martin, the man who deceived her while pretending to be his own brother?

Could the Abbotts Be Facing Martin Laurent Again?

For now, Dr. Laurence Markham’s true identity remains a mystery. What viewers do know is that he has already proven himself to be dangerous, especially after teaming up with Patty to target Diane and Jack.

The Abbott family currently has its hands full dealing with Patty, who had Diane abducted and tried to kill Jack again. But they might be in double trouble if Dr. Laurence Markham does turn out to be Martin Laurent back to wreak more havoc on the Abbotts.

For now, there’s no confirmation that Dr. Laurence Markham and Martin Laurent are one and the same — but Y&R fans clearly aren’t ruling out the possibility!
