General Hospital Recap: Drew Plays Dirty, Maxie Won’t Wake Up, Gio and Emma Get Closer and More

Comments

The August 20 episode of General Hospital saw plenty of drama! Maxie’s (Kirsten Storms) loved ones clung to hope as she remained unconscious, Drew (Cameron Mathison) maneuvered to pin assault charges on Michael (Rory Gibson), Gio (Giovanni Mazza) and Emma shared a close moment, Curtis (Donnell Turner) realized who was behind the investigation into Stella(Vernee Watson), Lulu (Alexa Havins) and Obrecht (Kathleen Gati) came together for Maxie’s children and more. Keep reading to find out how it all went down.

Stick To The Story

Drew approached Gio at the Metro Court pool as Martin trailed behind him. Gio shut Drew down when he brought up the Quartermaines and stalked off. Drew smirked to Martin that Gio would be less arrogant once Sonny was gone and Michael was in prison. Drew briefed Martin on his plan to have Michael arrested for assaulting a public official. Martin took issue with Drew’s version of events, given how Drew had goaded Michael, but Drew was determined to pin the charges on Michael to increase Willow’s chances of gaining access to Wiley and Amelia. “Once I get her kids back, she’ll realize that everything I did — everything I did — was out of love for her,” reasoned Drew. “Including sleeping with her mother?” replied a dubious Martin.

Martin further burst Drew’s bubble by pointing out that Michael was a sympathetic figure who already had been awarded full custody of his children. Plus, Michael and Curtis could leverage Aurora Media to further elevate Michael’s image. Drew scoffed that Curtis would be too busy defending Stella from fraud charges, then said that he’d told ADA Turner that Martin had been a witness to the assault. Drew wanted Martin to go to the PCPD to corroborate his statement. Martin was suspicious of how Drew knew Stella was under investigation and balked at signing an inaccurate statement. Drew seethed that he was Martin’s biggest client, and that Martin “couldn’t afford” to alienate him.

Curtis summoned Alexis to his office and filled her in on Stella’s travails with the insurance investigators. “Something’s off, Alexis,” he sighed. Stella entered and pooh-poohed the idea of Curtis retaining a lawyer for her. She was alarmed when Alexis noted that she could face criminal charges for insurance fraud, and Curtis and Alexis convinced her she should have legal counsel to be better safe than sorry.

The trio sat down and Stella told Alexis everything she knew about the investigation, eventually admitting that she had altered dates to benefit her clients (“Rarely, but I’ve done it”). Alexis pointed out that this constituted fraud. Stella protested that she’d only altered dates seven times in the past five years, and only when patients were being denied critical treatment or about to lose their houses due to medical debt. Stella mentioned how Martin hadn’t even been aware that his coverage had lapsed. “Hold up,” interjected Curtis. “Martin?”

Stella confirmed that Martin’s case was of interest to the investigators, who had said he couldn’t represent her because Martin was going to face questions of his own. Curtis quickly connected the dots from Martin to Drew. He reminded Stella of their recent encounter with Drew and Martin at the pool, suggesting that Martin may have innocently mentioned something to Drew. “The investigators said that the orders came from higher up,” he pointed out. “What could be higher up than a sitting congressman?” Alexis concurred that Drew wasn’t above using his power for his own ends. Curtis was confident that Congressman Cain was deliberately targeting someone Curtis loves.

Endless Love

In Maxie’s hospital room, Lucas was anxious to determine the cause of her heart attack. Spinelli watched from the hallway as an equally worried Lulu embraced him. Lucas and Liz emerged from the room to update Spinelli on Maxie’s latest bloodwork, which gave no indication that her body was rejecting her transplanted heart. Spinelli was about to rush into Maxie’s room to sit with her when he realized he needed to tell the kids what was going on. He was grateful when Lulu volunteered to do so instead.

Spinelli went into the room. “Fear not, Maxie, I’m here,” Spinelli told his unconscious love, who was hooked up to machines and breathing through a ventilator. He pleaded with Maxie to wake up, telling her, “You are irreplaceable in so many ways.” He vowed that as soon as she opened her eyes, he was going to ask her to marry him. “So please, my love, open your eyes,” he begged.

Later, Liz checked in on Lucas, who was panicked that Maxie wasn’t waking up. At first, he said, he had felt relief over being able to save someone he loved, unlike what happened with Sam, his half sister. “But now, I’m not so sure,” he fretted. Liz said just the right thing to soothe Lucas, who beamed that his mom, the late Bobbie, would be proud of what a great nurse Liz was.

Better Together

At Maxie’s place, Lulu relieved Emma of her babysitting duties and fought back tears as she steeled herself to speak to Maxie’s children. Obrecht dropped by, somberly telling Lulu she had come to see James and didn’t want any trouble. Lulu took her at her word and invited her in.

Obrecht had heard about Maxie from Mac and wondered what the kids had been told. Just then, Georgie and James entered, squabbling. Georgie let it slip that their mom was in the hospital, which was news to James. Lulu and Obrecht exchanged a look. Obrecht took the lead in gently explaining the situation to the youngsters, assuring Georgie and James that their mom was in excellent hands.

Once the kids were out of the room, Lulu sincerely thanked Obrecht for how she had handled the tricky conversation. Lulu sensed there was something Obrecht wasn’t telling her. With difficulty, Obrecht revealed that the longer Maxie didn’t wake up, the likelier it was that she would slip into a coma.

Strength In Numbers

Back at the hospital, Cody tried his best to be there for Mac, calling him a good man. Mac said that if he was, he had the girls to thank — raising Robin, Maxie and Georgie was the greatest privilege of his life. Cody credited Maxie with convincing him not to leave town and making him want to be a part of their family. “And you are,” Mac stressed. “Because she never gave up on me,” added Cody.

Anna rushed to Felicia’s side. Felicia admitted that she was barely holding it together and said she was trying to stay strong for Mac, Spinelli and Cody. She broke down crying as she noted that she’d gotten a miracle when Maxie was young and received B.J.’s heart. “What if that miracle has run its course?” Felicia wept.

Anna assured Felicia that miracles didn’t have expiration dates and reminded Felicia of how much Maxie loved her life. “I believe that she really wants to stay here with us,” Anna declared, adding that Maxie was strong like her mother.

Lucas gathered with Anna, Mac, Felicia, Cody and Spinelli to reveal that Maxie’s latest toxicology screen needed further analysis because there was an anomaly in her blood, “an unidentified enzyme.” Anna followed Lucas back to the nurses’ station and was alarmed when he told her that he had never seen anything like this before. Anna wondered if it was possible that Maxie had been poisoned.

At the pool, a troubled Emma informed Gio that Maxie was in the hospital. “It’s really bad,” she sighed. Gio opened up about his own experience with his late mother’s hospitalization. “I don’t wish that feeling on anybody,” he said. Emma revealed that she’d been able to sense how worried Anna was; it was the first time she’d ever seen her grandmother truly scared. Emma admitted that she, too, was scared. Gio put his arm around her and she leaned into his embrace.

Emma apologized to Gio for trauma-dumping on him and bringing up bad memories of Camila’s sickness. Gio told Emma that she had been there for him through all of the tumult of his life in recent months and had never flinched. He took her hand and declared, “I’m not flinching, either.” Emma beamed at him.

Innocent Until Proven Guilty

Justine was there to greet Diane, Michael and Sonny when they showed up at the PCPD, where the ADA planned to ask Michael some questions about the “alleged incident,” as Diane put it, between Drew and Michael at the Metro Court. Sonny pulled Justine aside and reminded her that she had overheard Drew admitting that he deliberately provoked Michael. “You and I both know that Michael is innocent,” he proclaimed. Justine refused Sonny’s request to slow down the case, saying that abusing her power would make her no better than Drew. “So you’re going after my son?” demanded Sonny. “You know damn well I can’t,” she said. She clarified that if the case went to trial, she would have to recuse herself, since she couldn’t disclose that she had been at his house the previous night and overheard Drew.

While Sonny and Justine talked, Michael and Diane discussed Michael’s theory that Willow was responsible for the shenanigans involving baby Daisy. Diane reminded Michael not to volunteer anything to the police, and wondered what Sonny was speaking to Justine about one-on-one.

Can I Get A Witness?

Justine and Sonny rejoined Diane and Michael when Chase returned after interviewing the other witnesses to Michael’s alleged assault on Drew. Chase reported that he had managed to speak to 8 out of the 9 witnesses — everyone but Martin. Just then, Drew and Martin arrived. Drew wondered why Michael wasn’t in handcuffs. Michael noted that he was there voluntarily and hadn’t been charged with anything. Drew pointed to his bruised face as evidence of the crime committed against him and Martin added that there was a record of it at G.H. “You went to the hospital because of a shiner?” mocked Sonny. Martin claimed that Drew had been concerned about vision loss; Diane didn’t bother to suppress a snicker.

Drew glowered when Chase revealed that no one he interviewed remembered Michael hitting him. Sonny smiled to himself. Drew blustered that what Chase said was impossible, and Chase took offense when Drew accused him of witness-tampering. Next, Drew accused Sonny of paying off the witnesses. “Careful,” Sonny warned. Justine said she would handle the matter, then berated Drew for what appeared to be an attempt to file a false assault report. Drew denied it and reminded the room that he had a witness — Martin.

With a flourish, Drew signed an affidavit describing Michael’s attack on him. Justine showed Martin where he should sign, provided the details were true. Drew handed him the pen.
