General Hospital Comings & Goings: Alley Mills Returns as Heather Webber!

General Hospital is welcoming back one of the most notorious villains in Port Charles history, with Alley Mills returning to the show as Heather Webber. The actress last aired on GH in October 2024 and will be back on screen starting Thursday, November 5, TV Insider revealed exclusively.

Heather Webber Returns to General Hospital

Alley Mills assumed the role of Heather Webber in October 2022 and won two Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Guest Performance in a Daytime Drama Series for her portrayal, the first in 2023 and the second in 2025.

Mills is best known to primetime audiences for playing matriarch Norma Arnold on ABC’s The Wonder Years for its six-season run between 1988 and 1993. She made her daytime debut on The Bold and the Beautiful in 2006 as Pam Douglas, appearing through 2019, then again from 2021 until 2022. Her last episode as Pam aired in 2024.

Before Mills, three other actresses played Heather, who was introduced back in 1976. The first Heather, Georganne LaPiere (Cher’s half sister), left the show the following year, and Heather was recast with Mary O’Brien from 1977-1979. In 1980, Robin Mattson took over as Heather until 1983. Mattson returned in 2004 for a short-term run, then came back in 2012, making her last appearance in 2016.

Mills was first contacted by GH to play Heather because Mattson, by far the actress most associated with the role, was unavailable. The actress told Soap Opera Digest in 2023 that she jumped at the chance to play such an out-there character. “I’ve never played a character like that before,” she noted. “I loved how smart she was. Whether anyone else knows it, she’s the smartest one in the room. I was excited because it was something new and different. I had done a lot of research by that point. I watched everything Robin Mattson ever did, and even the Heathers before her, too. I had a good three weeks to do all of that, so I was ready to rock it. I was in a very aggressive frame of mind.” 

Mills’ first run ended in February 2023, but just a few months later, she resumed taping as Heather. Mills shared with Soap Opera Digest, “She’s sort of remarkably easy to slip back into,” the actress chuckles. “It was easier than I thought it would be! It was really nice to have a little break from her psyche, though. Every once in a while my granddaughter runs lines with me and I think I scare her because Heather is pretty intense! But what I love about Heather is that she’s an overcomer, she’s a survivor. I love that part of it.”

Over her decades in the General Hospital universe, Heather has stirred up all manner of trouble.

In the storyline that put the character on the map, Heather got pregnant by Jeff Webber (Richard Dean Anderson), but when Jeff made it clear that he wasn’t going to leave his wife, Monica (Leslie Charleson), she sold her newborn son to Diana Taylor (Brooke Bundy) and lied to Jeff that she had miscarried. Jeff took pity on Heather and married her, and Heather took a job as the Taylors’ nanny so she could be close to her son, who Diana named P.J. Heather then plotted to drive Diana insane by dosing her with LSD, but she accidentally consumed the hallucinogenic herself and wound up institutionalized. The truth about P.J.’s identity was eventually revealed and the boy was renamed Steven Lars Webber.

For her next act, Heather decided to kill Diana — and frame good-girl nurse Anne Logan (Susan Pratt), Jeff’s new love, for the crime! Diana turned up dead, and Heather successfully implicated Anne by writing her name in Diana’s blood. But in a shocking twist, the real killer turned out to be Heather’s own mother, Alice Grant (Lieux Dressler).

Heather then teamed up with her lover, Scott Baldwin (Kin Shriner), to make a play for the hefty trust fund Alan Quartermaine (Stuart Damon) had set up for his illegitimate son, Jason, whose mother was Heather’s cousin, Susan Moore (Gail Ramsey).

Over two decades after Heather left Port Charles to join Jeff and Steven Lars in Colorado, she returned to town in 2004 and set her sights on Edward Quartermaine (John Ingle), who was mourning the recent death of his beloved wife, Lila, drugging him to induce a heart attack so that she could win brownie points by “saving his life.” She also found the time to kill cop Ross Duncan (Matt Crane) and frame Skye Quartermaine (Robin Christopher) for his murder. Heather and Edward got married, but her schemes soon came to light thanks to Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary). The marriage was annulled and Heather was committed to Ferncliff Sanitarium.

Heather was next seen in 2012. She was released from Ferncliff and, with reluctant co-conspirator Todd Manning (Roger Howarth), orchestrated the baby swap that made Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) believe that her baby boy, Danny, had died, when in reality, he had gone home with an unsuspecting Téa Delgado (Florencia Lozano), whose baby was stillborn. Eventually, her trickery was uncovered and Danny was reunited with Sam and Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) that they learned Heather had switched the results of Danny’s paternity test and Jason really was the boy’s father.

In 2013, Heather revealed that she was Franco’s (Roger Howarth) mother — and that Scott Baldwin was his father. Heather kidnapped and nearly killed Franco’s lover, Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright), but was stopped in time. Heather was shipped back to a psychiatric facility, where in 2014 she attempted to inject Franco’s new love interest, Nina Reeves (then-Michelle Stafford), with an overdose of LSD.

Heather resurfaced again in 2022, now played by Mills, for a very busy stretch of wreaking havoc. It was revealed that she was the biological mother of the dastardly Esme Prince (Avery Pohl), the product of her dalliance with serial killer Ryan Chamberlain (Jon Lindstrom), and Heather also went on a killing spree as The Hook, murdering Brando Corbin (Johnny Wactor) and, it appeared at the time, Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud), though she later turned up alive.

Heather wound up in Pentonville, but she got released in 2024 when doctors learned that a faulty hip replacement had resulted in cobalt poisoning that may have caused her violent behavior. Steven Lars (Scott Reeves) returned to town to escort her away from Port Charles.

As for what brings Heather back to Port Charles this time — and if she will return rehabilitated or up to her old tricks — GH fans will have to wait until November 5 to find out!
