THE 411
Scott Bryce's showbiz lineage spans at least four generations — he's the great-grandson of a circus juggler, the grandson of a vaudeville talent manager and the son of the late actor (ex-Bill, GL et al) and director Ed Bryce, who met and married Bryce's mom, Dorothy, while doing summer stock theater. Raised in a New York City suburb with two brothers, David and Phillip, Bryce found his calling fairly early. "It's in the blood; you just have to do it," he told Digest in 1985. "By the time I got to high school, I knew I wanted to be an actor." His father's name opened a few doors to jobs on both stage and screen, and by the time he was 24, he landed the role of Craig Montgomery, ATWT's deceptively clean-cut, All-American villain. Bryce managed to wrench surprising sympathy for his devil, but it was a taxing role that wore heavily on the intense, wryly funny young actor; he endured hate mail and the occasional death threat, but was nevertheless beloved by fans for his complex portrayal. Burned out after five years in the soap grind, Bryce left for the first time to travel to those parts of the world where he wasn't known for WORLD TURNS and then try his luck in L.A. Over the years, he worked steadily in film, television and theater, returning for two more short stints as his scheming Oakdale alter ego. Craig was finally recast in 2000 (first with Hunt Block, then Jeff Meek in 2006), while Bryce was working as a regular on the critically acclaimed WB show POPULAR. Seven years later, he returned to reclaim the role he originated.
Bryce is married to Broadway actress Jodi Stevens. They have a son, Jackson.

GUY LOSES GIRL
"It's like a cop losing his partner, somebody that you rely on and you can evolve a special chemistry with. So, losing her was a big adjustment for me and I'm in limbo about that." — on Meg Ryan's (ex-Betsy) exit, Soap Opera Digest, 1/1/85
BAD BOY
"What has he not done in two and a half years? I've been a perfume magnate, a chauffeur, a corporate personality, white-collar criminal, extortionist, blackmailer, arsonist. I've had mistresses, affairs, a wife I'm in love with, a baby that's not mine ... I've been able to play a really wide range. So I'm grateful. But now, I felt like I'm a little stuck." — Digest, 1/1/85
TOUGH LOVE
"Liz [Hubbard, Lucinda] is my mentor, my teacher. I am her student. And there was my boss, yelling at me. No, she wasn't yelling. She was firm. She was concerned, and with much respect and love. And I said, 'I've got to get out of here, Liz.' She said, 'Yep. You sure do.' " — regarding his sudden lack of professionalism after being burnt out playing Craig, Digest, 6/16/87
IT IS WHAT IT IS
"First of all, it's amazing [ATWT] gets on the air, much less with any quality. And the fact that it can be any good is extraordinary, because it's impossible to write that quickly. It's impossible to produce that quickly. It's certainly impossible to act that quickly. And it can't be edited that fast. Yet somehow, every afternoon, there we are.... My agents have suggested taking soaps off my resumé. It's meaningless. It's like telling a Broadway producer how many high school productions you were in. As unfair as that sounds, that's what it is." — Digest, 8/2/94
WORLD BANK
"The show is very important to me. I was able to grow as an actor, to come out here [to L.A.] and struggle and then go back, fill up the coffers and do it again. I was very fortunate." — from a "Where Are They Now?" update, Digest, 10/26/99
IN HIS SHOES
"I have never met the man. If this was his decision, that's great. If it wasn't, that's the kind of thing that happens in our business and I can only hope he will look back shortly and say, 'Thank God that happened.' " — on replacing Jeff Meek (ex-Craig), Soap Opera Weekly, 3/22/07
