Five Things That Happened On November 28 In Soap History

In 1983, Kim Zimmer debuted as Reva Shayne on Guiding Light, a role for which she ultimately went on to win four Daytime Emmys as Outstanding Lead Actress. Prior to joining GL, Zimmer had appeared on The Doctors as Nola Dancy Aldrich and on One Life To Live as Echo DiSavoy. GL's then-head writer, Pamela K. Long, created the role of Reva for Zimmer and her arrival on the Springfield canvas was a game-changer for the show. Fiery Reva became one of its signature heroines, and one-half of arguably its most enduring supercouple, Josh and Reva. Zimmer exited the show in 1990, but returned in 1995 and remained with GL until its final episode in 2009.

In 1983, Vincent Irizarry debuted as Guiding Light's Brandon "Lujack" Luvonaczek, the surprise long-lost son of Alexandra Spaulding, a role that catapulted him to daytime fame. In 2016, he recalled to Soap Opera Digest, "When I auditioned for Lujack, it was only supposed to be for three days. They hired me. I did the three days and it was great. Then they gave me three more days.” Eventually, he signed a contract. “We negotiated [my commitment] down to two years. I didn’t want to do any more than that because I didn’t want to be tied down.” Of Lujack's look, he said, “I remember it was the period of Michael Jackson and the 'Beat It' music video. Since Lujack was in a gang, the Galahads, the costume designer had us in fedora hats, suspenders and pastel colors, looking like we were right out of the video. So we weren’t the most ominous looking street gang.”

In 1983, General Hospital's Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) saw a back-from-the-dead Laura Spencer (Genie Francis) for the first time since she disappeared from Port Charles and was subsequently presumed dead in 1981. The reunion took place on the day Luke was inaugurated as Port Charles's mayor (an office Laura would later hold herself). When Luke caught a glimpse of his beloved Laura while standing on the balcony of his new dwelling (the mayor's mansion, where he and Laura had tied the knot in 1981), he couldn't believe his eyes. Luke raced across the lawn and swept Laura into his arms for a three-hankie reunion.

In 2005, All My Children’s Greenlee Lavery (Rebecca Budig, far r.) blew up the Kane/Montgomery Thanksgiving by exposing that Kendall Hart Slater (Alicia Minshew, far l.) had used her own egg rather than Greenlee’s when she was inseminated with Ryan’s sperm, and was carrying her own biological child, not Greenlee’s. "What kind of a sick joke is this, Greenlee?" demanded Kendall's mother and Greenlee's stepmother, Erica Kane (Susan Lucci, seated). "What are you talking about, Greenlee? You told me that Kendall was pregnant with our child, yours and mine," interjected a confused Ryan Lavery (Cameron Mathison, seated far r.), Greenlee's husband. "That was the plan, the terms of our surrogate deal," seethed Greenlee. "You were supposed to be implanted with my fertilized egg. I guess I skipped the fine print where you were inseminated instead, had your own egg fertilized. Please join me in a toast. To Kendall — the one and only mother of Ryan's baby."

In 2019, Daniel Goddard aired for the final time as Cane Ashby on Young and Restless, a role he had begun playing in 2007. He confirmed his exit in a social media post, writing, "It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that I will no longer be part of the cast of the Young and the Restless. I am as shocked and gutted as you are… I almost didn’t post but I felt that the most loyal & loving fans an actor could wish for deserved to know and watch the last story arc knowing the rich meaning behind it. I am forever grateful for the 13 years I have been a part of the Y&R family."
