Anthony Geary Exited General Hospital as Luke Spencer and Other Big Soap Moments From July 27

In 1981, Guiding Light’s Kelly busted Nola (Lisa Brown) for getting pregnant by Floyd (Tom Nielsen), but telling Kelly that the baby was his. The show devoted the first quarter of the episode to this long-awaited confrontation. "You were afraid that I would find out the truth, that you were lying through your teeth!" Kelly raged. "When it comes to deception, you are a real pro!" Kelly realizing that Nola was not carrying his child paved the way for his reunion with his true love, Morgan, who he would go on to marry the following month.

In 2011, Jessica Collins made her Young and Restless debut as Avery Clark, Phyllis's younger sister. Collins, who had previously played Dinah Lee Mayberry on Loving, remained with the show through 2015 and in 2016, she took home the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her Y&R work.

In 2012 on Days of Our Lives, Andrew Stark had taken Melanie hostage in the tunnels beneath Horton Square. As prominent Salem residents gathered for a benefit in the late Lexie Carver’s honor, Gabi entered the tunnels in search of Melanie, with Brady and Chad following. Brady became alarmed when he smelled gas, and when Andrew lit a match to illuminate a map, he inadvertently triggered an explosion. Chad anxiously noted that there were many more pockets of gas in the tunnels, and if another one exploded, the results could be catastrophic. A second explosion occurred, pinning Andrew under a beam, followed soon by a third, which shattered the windows in the ballroom above ground and sent people (including Lauren Koslow's Kate and Drake Hogestyn's John) flying around the room! Abigail wound up in the elevator with the doors closing behind her and the cable poised to snap. The ballroom erupted in flames, a chandelier fell and the ceiling began to crumble! In a nearby warehouse, Sami fell from a catwalk and EJ managed to snatch her by the arm as she dangled over the edge! This was a cliffhanger episode that was not resolved until after the show’s hiatus for the Summer Olympics.

In 2015, Anthony Geary exited GH as Luke. The actor first joined the Port Charles ranks in 1978 and rose to daytime superstardom in his pairing with Genie Francis's Laura Webber Baldwin before he left the show in 1983. Geary returned for a storyline arc in 1984, then came back in 1991 as a new character, Luke's lookalike cousin, Bill Eckert. In 1993, Bill was killed off and Geary resumed playing Luke. In 2015, he opted to retire from the role that had earned him a record seven Daytime Emmy wins as Outstanding Lead Actor. In 2017, he returned for a one-day appearance when Jane Elliot, who has since returned, retired from GH as Tracy Quartermaine.

In 2017 on General Hospital, Jason Morgan (Billy Miller) — who later turned out to actually be Drew Cain — was horrified when he learned that his ailing wife, Samantha McCall (Kelly Monaco), was suffering from a potentially deadly disease called toxoplasmosis, which had been causing her to have hallucinations and worse. While no one knew it at the time, Sam had shot Sonny and left him for dead!
