What Happened to Madeline Reeves on General Hospital
Madeline Reeves was nothing but trouble on General Hospital. Actress Donna Mills first appeared as the character in March 2014 and made sporadic recurring appearances in 2015 and one episode in 2018, earning an Outstanding Guest Performer Daytime Emmy Award in 2015. Mommie Dearest
Madeline was introduced as the mother of Nina Reeves (then-Michelle Stafford) and Nathan West (Ryan Paevey). Nathan suspected that Dr. Silas Clay (Michael Easton) was responsible for putting Nina in a coma years ago, but it was eventually revealed that Madeline had left her daughter comatose after poisoning her in an attempt to kill the child she was carrying. Then it came out that Dr. Liesl Obrecht. (Kathleen Gati) was not only Madeline’s sister but Nathan’s biological mother, and had given him to her sister to raise as her own. Madeline also claimed that Nina had died, but before being shipped off to stand trial for her crimes, she revealed that Nina was very much alive.
When Nina finally emerged from that decades-long coma, she was naturally furious at her mother when Madeline showed up in Port Charles, having avoided a conviction and begging forgiveness. Madeline agreed to help Nina kidnap Ava Jerome’s (Maura West) newborn baby, and was ultimately arrested for her role in the crime.
While behind bars, Madeline schemed with attorney Ric Lansing (Rick Hearst) to get her released and sink her claws into the Reeves family fortune. While secretly sleeping together, they plotted for Ric to marry Nina, vulnerable following a fight with her lover, Franco (Roger Howarth), then gaslighted her into believing she was losing her marbles so that she would land in a mental institution and they could access her trust fund.
Ultimately, the plan was a bust. Speaking of which, Madeline was busted for murdering Silas Clay and was hauled back to prison. Nina disowned her mother, but did visit her one day in Pentonville. After a testy visit, Nina stormed out — and Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) then went to see her. He got Madeline to admit that Nina’s baby hadn’t died and that she had, in fact, given birth to a daughter! Madeline offered to help locate the girl if he got her out of prison, but Valentin was sure he could do it on his own and left her to rot. It took years for the full truth to finally emerge: Nina had actually given birth to twins, Nelle Benson (Chloe Lanier) and Willow (Katelyn MacMullen).
Madeline made the news again when she was denied parole, and not long thereafter, Nina got a phone call telling her that her mother was dead. Nina joined Maxie, Valentin, and Obrecht at Madeline’s funeral to find they were the only ones who showed up. Nina gave a halfhearted eulogy and said a final farewell.
In June 2026, it was revealed that when Obrecht gave birth to twin boys, Madeline told everyone that one of them, Cassius, had died at birth, but she’d really given the infant to Faison to raise in secret.
