The Hortons were thrown for a loop when Doug Williams III (Peyton Meyer) showed up in Salem after the passing of his biological grandfather, Doug Williams. But his roots on the show date all the way back to 1975, when Doug made the decision to father a brother or a sister for his beloved daughter, Hope.

A Moment In Time

Spurred on by Hope’s desperation for a sibling, Doug began contacting adoption agencies in an effort to grant his only child’s wish. Ultimately, he decided to go a different route, that of artificial insemination, since Neil Curtis had launched a surrogacy program at the hospital. Rebecca, Doug’s housekeeper and Hope’s devoted nanny, encouraged him. Doug made a large financial donation to the program as well as a sperm donation, and in return was assured an anonymous surrogate mother to carry his child. Unbeknownst to Doug, Neil selected Rebecca to be the mother of Doug’s baby!

In the interim, Julie was pregnant by her husband, Bob Anderson, but Brooke Hamilton (the paramour of Julie’s son, David Banning) began spreading lies that the baby was Doug’s. Although Doug loved Julie, he stepped aside so that she could have a happy family with Bob and their new baby. Having lost Julie, Doug moved forward with his surrogacy plan. Soon, Rebecca was inseminated with Doug’s sperm, and planned to tell everyone the child belonged to her fiancé, Johnny, who had won an art scholarship to Paris. Upon giving birth she would claim her baby was stillborn, but actually raise her offspring with Doug.

Rebecca’s plan hit a snag when Julie suffered a miscarriage and Doug asked her to come live with him until she could divorce Bob and marry him. Fearing she’d be out of a job and lose access to the baby she was carrying, Rebecca met with attorney Don Craig and revealed the details of her insemination. However, Julie, unhappy about Doug’s surrogacy plan and not wanting everyone to believe the child she lost had been his by rushing back to him, opted to stay with Bob. Rebecca was relieved — until Doug suggested she move on and find a life of her own. When Robert LeClair, who was in love with Rebecca, found her crying, she lied that she was pregnant by Johnny, who didn’t want children. Robert relayed this to Doug, who welcomed Rebecca back into his home and offered to have a nursery set up for both of their soon-to-be born babies.

Eventually, Johnny returned to Salem and was stunned to find that Rebecca was pregnant. Insistent that the child wasn’t his, Johnny accused Rebecca of sleeping with Doug, which Doug vehemently denied. Robert stepped in, told Johnny to go back to Paris, and promised to take care of Rebecca, even offering to marry her to give her baby a name. When Johnny had a change of heart and offered to wed Rebecca, she accepted. Realizing her marriage had to be based on honesty, Rebecca came clean with Johnny about her baby’s paternity. She explained that she’d been devastated by the loss of her child in an auto accident years earlier and felt the need to have another baby. Plus, the $5,000 she was paid to be a surrogate was the money she gave Johnny to go to Paris to study art. Though shocked, Johnny remained committed to Rebecca.

Meanwhile, Doug and Julie got engaged in 1976. (The arrival of Doug’s ex-wife, Kim, claiming that they were still married, temporarily derailed things, but the pair reconciled when Kim admitted she and Doug were legally divorced.) Hoping to have children with Julie, Doug told Neil that he no longer wanted the surrogate’s baby, but that the mother could keep the money she’d been paid. Then Johnny split town on the day of his wedding to Rebecca, leaving her a note that accused her of wanting the baby for her own selfish reasons and saying that although he loved her, he couldn’t handle the situation.

Robert comforted Rebecca, once again offered to marry her and adopt her child, and this time she accepted. With Robert by her side and with Neil as her doctor, Rebecca gave birth to a baby boy on August 10, 1976. Robert decided to name him after his best friend, Doug, unaware that little Dougie was actually Doug’s biological son!

Robert suggested that Rebecca talk to Johnny to make sure he would give up all claim to little Dougie, but Rebecca insisted Robert stay away from her ex. When Robert found Johnny’s good-bye letter to Rebecca, which spoke of how he couldn’t handle her baby being another man’s child, he was shocked. He became suspicious of Rebecca’s every move and wondered if his whole life with her was a lie. Rebecca, on the other hand, was truly happy, finally realizing what real love was. Robert told Don he was hesitant about adopting Dougie and confronted Johnny about his letter. Johnny urged Robert to discuss it with Rebecca.

Instead, Robert had attorney Greg Peters attempt to find out the name listed on Dougie’s birth certificate. Neil refused to reveal it and told Rebecca about her husband’s suspicions. Rebecca confronted Johnny, who told her the only way to save her marriage was to tell Robert the truth. Although Johnny and Rebecca realized they still loved each other, Rebecca swore she would never be unfaithful to Robert. Rebecca headed home and had it out with Robert about going behind her back and not asking her about Johnny’s letter.

Determined to help, Johnny went to see Don’s secretary, Linda, who knew the whole story behind Rebecca’s pregnancy short of who the father was. Linda found Robert and revealed that Rebecca had undergone artificial insemination. A contrite Robert begged Rebecca for a second chance, and she agreed. The pair went on to sign papers for Robert to legally adopt Dougie. On the baby’s christening day (Doug and Julie were the little boy’s godparents) many of Rebecca’s repressed feelings surfaced. She couldn’t ignore Doug’s sense of pride, and learning that Johnny was leaving town only complicated things. Although Johnny begged her to come with him she refused, noting that she couldn’t leave her family.

Ultimately, Johnny returned to town, told Rebecca he was ready to accept her baby, and asked her to come away with him. Doug warned Rebecca that if she left, she couldn’t return. She’d hurt too many people, including him, as he had come to love Dougie like a son, and Hope, who’d grown attached to him like a little brother. Rebecca followed her heart and left, telling Robert she would always love him in a special way.

Robert filed divorce papers, and Rebecca’s life with Johnny slowly began to fall apart, as it became clear that he wasn’t truly ready to take on the responsibilities of a family. Rebecca returned to Salem to give Johnny some breathing room. Doug was openly hostile to her, realizing she’d leave again, take Dougie with her, and hurt Hope. And Robert feared losing his son again. Julie, however, understood her plight, suspecting that Rebecca would only be happy with the man she truly loved, Johnny.

Rebecca and Robert divorced, and the pair agreeing to share custody of Dougie. When Rebecca revealed she wanted to move to Japan with Johnny, Robert sued for full custody of their son, but lost. Before leaving Salem in 1977, Rebecca promised that she and Dougie would visit once a year.

In 1979, Rebecca died in a plane crash, and Robert regained custody of Dougie. A safety deposit box containing a letter to Doug from Rebecca was discovered. It revealed the long-kept secret that Doug was Dougie’s biological father. Doug kept the information to himself and set up a trust for the boy. That is, until Robert announced his plans to take the child, who had by then been renamed Charles, and move to Paris. Doug finally told Robert the truth: He was the boy’s father. Robert agreed to remain in Salem so that Doug could be a part of Charles’s life. The only condition was that Doug not tell the boy the truth about his paternity, and he agreed. The following year, Robert decided to move to Paris with Charles.

Salem hadn’t seen hide nor hair of Charles since 1980. However, in 2024, his son, Doug Williams III, turned up in a prison cell, but was released in time to find the family mourning his grandfather, Doug. His arrival was welcomed with open arms by Julie, but suspicion by Hope, who didn’t quite trust her newfound nephew. And with good reason, it quickly became clear, as Doug III immediately swiped a diamond necklace that belonged to the late Alice Horton.
