Is The Bold and the Beautiful’s Surrogacy Story Ruining Both Carter and Steffy?
On The Bold and the Beautiful, Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) getting pregnant with Carter’s (Lawrence Saint-Victor) baby was always going to create problems for both of them. But the way Carter and Steffy have handled the situation has raised a different question: Has this storyline come at the expense of the characters themselves?
Carter Has Crossed a Line
With his wife, Daphne (Murielle Hilaire), desperate to have a baby but unable to carry one herself, Carter thought he had found the perfect solution: Steffy could act as their egg donor and surrogate to conveniently explain away her pregnancy. However, Steffy refused to go along with his scheme and insisted they should just come clean and tell their spouses the truth about their night together.
But Carter refused to take “no” for an answer, unwilling to risk his own marriage if the truth came out. Instead, he selfishly used his wife’s desire to have a baby to put pressure on Steffy, even going so far as to lie to Daphne that Steffy had already agreed to be their surrogate. By putting Steffy on the spot in front of her friend, Carter was counting on her not wanting to crush Daphne’s dream to her face.
He has also dismissed Steffy’s concerns about not being able to give up her baby when the time comes, having clearly made up his own mind, everyone else be damned.
Carter has done some questionable things in the past — like stealing Forrester Creations — but he’s never been this outright manipulative and cruel. He is treating Steffy’s pregnancy — and potentially their child — as the solution to his own problem, while denying Daphne the truth she needs to make an informed choice about the arrangement.
This has not gone unnoticed by fans, who have been calling Carter out on social media. “He has turned into the bad guy,” B&B viewer DeirdreDrdr noted on X (formerly Twitter). “He is treating Steffy like dirt. It’s her child too. But he wants to steal it from her so he and Daphne can be happy. If Daphne knew the truth, she would be mortified.”
Will the Real Steffy Forrester Please Stand Up?
Steffy’s own 180 is equally out of character. Yes, Carter put her in a difficult position with Daphne, but she still had agency in the situation. Yet she went from being determined to be honest with her husband, Finn (Tanner Novlan), about getting pregnant with another man’s child to caving to Carter’s manipulation and agreeing to surrender her biological child to another woman in the blink of an eye. “Why is Steffy letting Carter bully her like this?” @JenniferCo90111 asked on X. “She is no pushover.”
Steffy — a forceful, independent character who normally pushes back when someone else tries to dictate her choices or impose their will on her — also has a complex history with motherhood that is at odds with how she’s behaving in this storyline. As she recently reminded Carter, she was heartbroken when she had to give up the baby girl she’d adopted when it turned out that she was actually Liam (Scott Clifton) and Hope’s (Annika Noelle) baby, who had been stolen from them at birth. She also suffered a devastating miscarriage before that. Now we’re expected to believe that she would give up her unborn baby without a fight?
The Characters Are Paying the Price for the Plot
The result of all this? B&B has gone all-in on a major storyline that can only be told by transforming its two lead characters into unrecognizable versions of themselves. Carter’s actions are making it difficult for viewers to root for him. And Steffy risks becoming a shadow of her former self as she finds herself becoming a pawn in a twisted game where the prize is her own flesh and blood.
The story can still turn this around, but the payoff has to do more than deliver a shocking reveal or a dramatic reckoning. It has to make sense of how these two characters got to this point without asking viewers to ignore everything they know about them. That is a much higher bar than simply resolving the secret — and one the story has yet to clear.
The question now is not whether this surrogacy secret will create more drama for Carter, Steffy, Daphne and Finn; of course it will. It’s whether or not the payoff to this storyline can make the choices it has forced on Carter and Steffy worth the damage to their characters.
