Gwen Loves ‘Getting Under Sarah’s Skin’ About Xander on Days of Our Lives, Says Emily O’Brien (EXCL)

Comments

Gwen hasn’t been back in Salem for very long, but already, the Days of Our Lives troublemaker has been stirring the pot — and as always, Sarah is one of her favorite targets! Gwen’s portrayer, Emily O’Brien, chuckles to Soap Opera Digest, “I think any chance that she has, she wants to get under her skin because Sarah has been living under Gwen’s skin for years!”

Playing Favorites

O’Brien observes, “Gwen has always been second — well, not even second; Gwen has always been maybe third or fourth or fifth. And it’s been Sarah that’s on the pedestal, always. She’s lost to her [in the past] and Gwen’s come back to town thinking, ‘I look different, I’ve got money in my wallet — maybe this time, I’m gonna win Xander over! But deep down, she knows that she’s not going to.”

That insecurity fuels Gwen’s drive to play dirty where Sarah is concerned, according to the actress. “She doesn’t want Sarah to ever see that side, so I think she likes to overly embellish everything with Sarah, to make her feel some sort of iota of what Gwen was feeling — which I don’t think she ever would,” O’Brien muses. “I don’t think Sarah would ever stoop down to Gwen’s level.”

That dynamic played out on screen this week when Gwen bragged to Sarah about hooking up with Xander again — which never actually happened. But Sarah bought it hook, line and sinker, and smacked Xander across the face as a result. Even after Xander set the record straight, Sarah was still furious, and later, Xander let Gwen know just how little he appreciated her “embellishment.”

Gwen responded by claiming that she was simply trying to help him out by making Sarah jealous. Still, allows O’Brien, “He doesn’t like her getting involved in their relationship. I think that in the beginning, he’s intrigued by Gwen and he thinks, ‘Oh, let’s have some fun with this, but feelings always come through the cracks, don’t they? So I think Gwen starts to get a bit more aggressive, trying not to let her feelings show, even though she’s saying, ‘This is light, this is fun. We’re just playing the jealousy game.’ But I think Xander picks up on what’s really happening,” which is to say, Gwen trying to get the upper hand on Sarah.

Asked if Gwen has any remorse for leading Sarah astray about what’s going on between her and Xander, O’Brien howls and says, “Do I even need to say anything? Isn’t the laugh enough? No, she’s been desperate to do this. She wants to just push the buttons. So, no, no remorse whatsoever! She thinks it’s fun and she’s really leaning into it.”

Friends Til The End

O’Brien hopes the tension between Gwen and Sarah remains thick so that she can continue to cross swords on-screen with Linsey Godfrey. Working with Godfrey “is the best,” she beams. “I love her. I adore her! Linsey and I are really good friends. She was just over at my house last week. We had like a girls’ day with some of the girls from the show. It was supposed to be a lunch, right? It lasted till 1 a.m! It was 1 p.m. till 1 a.m., no exaggeration, and it was fantastic! Linsey is one of those women that I’ve just bonded with, and we celebrated her birthday just the week before that.”
The pair is together so often away from work that slipping into their characters is actually a little more challenging. Explains O’Brien, “It’s funny, because we’ve become such good friends that now we’re when we’re on set together, working together, we’re like, ‘This is almost weird!’ We’re so used to being friends and going to dinner or whatever that when we have to be serious on set, it almost seems the opposite [of what’s familiar]. We spend more time together outside of the show than we do on set.”
O’Brien also welcomes Gwen’s dogged interest in Xander, because it means she gets to work with Paul Telfer. “He’s become a very close friend of mine, too,” she reports. “I spent a lot of time with him and his wife, Carmen. I knew him outside of the show years ago, as well — he was in sort of the same circle as me — so it was so strange when not only I came on to DAYS, but they paired me up with him. It was very bizarre, but in the best way possible. We got to know each other really well. Paul is such an absolute gentleman, a professional, always ready to play. He encourages playing and experimenting and making the scenes more interesting. He’s like an actor’s dream scene partner. I can’t praise him enough!”
