General Hospital Recap: Dante Confronts Jack, Carly Is Threatened, Jason Is Suspicious About Anna

Comments

In the February 9 episode of General Hospital, the news of Anna’s (Finola Hughes) mental breakdown began to spread through Port Charles. Jason (Steve Burton) was skeptical of Felicia’s (Kristina Wagner) message from Anna, Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) and Jack (Chris McKenna) compared notes, Mac (John J. York) confided his fears to Laura (Genie Francis), Emma (Braedyn Bruener) leaned on Gio (Giovanni Mazza) for support, and Cullum’s (Andrew Hawkes) announcement concerned Carly (Laura Wright) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart). Oh, and Lucy (Lynn Herring) gave Sidwell (Carlo Rota) an ultimatum after getting into a tiff with Ava (Maura West) over the billionaire! Here’s how it all went down.

Take The Lead

At the Quartermaine house, Felicia explained to Jason how upsetting it had been to see Anna unravel. Delivering Anna’s message, Felicia shared that Anna wanted him to know her suspicion that Cesar Faison was alive was correct, and he’d been holding her captive this whole time. At first, Jason couldn’t believe that was true, since he’d shot Faison in the chest himself. But when Felicia added that, according to Anna, he was the one who had to stop Faison, Jason wondered if Anna was telling the truth. Recounting his conversation with Anna from Halloween (the day she was supposedly kidnapped), he told Felicia that he thought he’d gotten her to see that someone was likely using Faison to distract her. His suspicions grew as Felicia continued that Anna claimed Obrecht and Peter had visited her, and Faison spoke with her through an intercom in her room, but she’d only seen him for a brief moment. Felicia asked Jason to fill Jack Brennan in on the conversation he’d had with Anna about Faison, but Jason didn’t think they should tell the WSB anything. Insisting that the agency caused the situation by preying on Anna’s weakness when it came to Cesar, Jason proclaimed that she was lucky the French authorities found her before the WSB could cover their tracks. Felicia agreed to trust Jason’s instincts because Anna trusted him to know what to do.

Job Security

Mac and Laura called Dante to the mayor’s office. There, they informed him that Anna wouldn’t be returning as police commissioner, and they weren’t sure what had happened to her because she was too incoherent to carry on a conversation. Dante wanted to know how the WSB assignment went sideways, so Mac told him that Anna claimed there had never been a mission and that she’d been held captive by Faison for months. While Anna recovered at the French facility and her legal issues were sorted out, the PCPD needed to permanently fill the police commissioner position. Since so much of Mac’s time was spent in Boston with Maxie, he and Laura wanted Dante to continue leading the department. However, Dante was hesitant, as he had other commitments. He agreed to take a few days to make a decision.

After Dante left, Laura asked Mac how he was handling the situation. He confided that between Maxie and Anna, he was trying to be strong for Felicia and Emma, but seeing Anna in that state had been hard and made him realize how much she’d been carrying, alone, for all these years. He owed Anna so much — especially for bringing Robin into his life — and he hoped she knew how much she changed his life. Laura was confident that Anna would come back to them, but Mac wasn’t sure if or when that would happen.

Swapping Theories

At the WSB office, Cullum updated Jack that Anna had been located at a mental hospital in France after suffering a breakdown in the field after going rogue and initiating an unauthorized operation. Doubting the director’s intel, Jack didn’t think that sounded like Anna; she was the best agent he knew and wouldn’t crack. Insisting his source was good, Cullum stated that Devane was no longer the WSB’s problem and directed Jack to focus on finding Valentin. With that, he exited.

When Dante later arrived at his office, demanding answers about Anna, Jack grumbled that he’d tried to get answers himself but was being stonewalled because the information was classified. Shocked when Dante informed him that Anna was claiming there had been no WSB assignment, Jack closed his office door and revealed that his gut had been telling him that something was off. Dante concurred that his was, too. Agreeing to keep the conversation between them, Jack shared that the photos Emma received from Anna at Christmas were fake: The WSB’s official story was that she’d doctored them herself, then went rogue to find Faison. But after what Dante just told him, Jack frowned, Anna must be in real trouble.

Spread The Word

Over coffee, Carly and Valentin chatted about how lucky they’d been not to get caught when Jack had unexpectedly shown up during the blizzard. But when Val declared he was going back to Wyndemere, Carly freaked out, not wanting him to get caught again because she couldn’t pull off their plan to bring down Jack alone. Playing the daughter card — by saying that she didn’t want to be the one to have to tell Charlotte he was dead — Carly got Valentin to change his mind.

Later, Carly opened the door to a man she didn’t know. Introducing himself, Cullum insinuated that her relationship with Jack was distracting her boyfriend from pursuing Valentin Cassadine when finding the fugitive should be Jack’s top priority. Then, Cullum informed her that Jack got the distressing news earlier that his colleague, Anna Devane, had suffered a mental breakdown while on a WSB assignment. Carly didn’t think that sounded like something Anna would do, and Cullum issued a veiled threat that anyone could crack under the right conditions.

Once Cullum left, Carly called Valentin back downstairs and told him about Anna’s supposed mental breakdown. Aware of who Cullum was, Valentin immediately declared that he was lying. Pretending to be Anna’s family, he called the French facility from a burner phone (which he then broke, presumably so the call couldn’t be traced). As he relayed that Anna had a psychotic break and was claiming Cesar Faison was alive and had held her captive, Carly wondered if that was a cover story to protect Anna from whatever she was doing for the WSB. Valentin didn’t believe the WSB had set it up, but did feel they were responsible for whatever Anna had gone through and vowed to hold the agency accountable.

Pick A Side

Lucy surprised Jenz at Wyndemere with a picnic basket brunch, only to find him cozy with Ava on the couch, in the midst of an online art auction. Since she didn’t bring enough for all three of them to eat, Jenz went to ask the chef to make more food, leaving the two women alone to exchange barbs over artwork and real estate commissions, Ava’s relationship with Nikolas, Lucy’s collection of husbands, Ava’s criminal history, and how Ava had managed to grow closer to Jenz in a matter of months while Lucy had been put off to the side after circling around the man for a year. Returning to the living room, Jenz noticed the tension between the women. Lucy sat on the couch with a smug smile as Ava made an excuse to leave so she could focus on the auction for him. Once alone with Lucy, Jenz asked what happened while he was gone, and Lucy groused that she could no longer “bite her tongue” and offered to tell him the entire “sordid” story about “that lunatic” he was spending so much time with. Shutting her down, Jenz said he was aware of the skeletons in Ava’s closet — and Lucy’s — and opined that if she’d been given a second chance, so should Ava. Refusing to be around Ava, Lucy demanded that Jenz choose between them. When he replied that he didn’t take ultimatums from anyone, even those he cared about as much as he did for her, Lucy declared that it was time for her to go. As she was putting on her coat, Jenz asked if she wanted to take her picnic basket, and Lucy spat that he might get hungry because Ava always left people wanting.

Right Here Waiting

Back from France, Emma filled in Gio about what had happened and worried the doctor wouldn’t be able to bring her grandmother back from her PTSD episode. Having always thought her grandmother was invincible, Emma cried that Anna had been so frantic and paranoid that Faison was after her, too. Nothing had registered when she tried to calm Anna down, and she felt hopeless. Josslyn then showed up unannounced and wanted to know why Emma was so upset. As Emma explained what had supposedly happened with her grandmother’s WSB mission and Anna’s claim that she’d been kidnapped by Cesar Faison, Josslyn’s radar pinged. She asked if Emma thought Britt and Nathan’s returns had been a trigger for Anna, and Emma divulged that it was a theory. Joss next asked if Anna had actually seen Faison, but Gio put a stop to the questions, since Emma had just gotten home and was very emotional. Taking the hint, Josslyn said good-bye, and once she was out in the hallway, pulled PK Sinclair’s novel The Crystalline Conspiracy out of her purse.

Next, Emma told Gio that she’d spoken with her grandfather, Robert, while she was in France. They’d decided that Emma should go to California to tell her mom in person about Anna, and she would then fly with Robin back to France. Ever the supportive boyfriend, Gio promised to be waiting for her whenever she returned. Once Emma had repacked her suitcase and was ready to go to the airport, Gio said he’d go with her because he wanted to repay the generosity she and Anna had shown him after his life imploded at the Nurses’ Ball. Trying to be strong, Emma insisted that she needed to handle it herself because that’s what her mom and grandma would do. But when they shared a hug, Emma whispered that she was scared, and Gio vowed that they’d face whatever happened together.
