General Hospital: Anthony Geary Remembered by His Husband on First Birthday Since His Passing
On May 29, what would have been General Hospital star Anthony Geary’s 79th birthday, his widower, Claudio Gama, shared a lovely message to his beloved husband on Instagram in a post that included a video montage of photos from Geary’s life and career — including some featuring Gama and their cat, Max.
Always and Forever
“Happy Birthday, my love,” Gama wrote. “Me and Max miss you every day. You are always in our thoughts. We miss your sweet smile, your beautiful voice, and the loving hugs and cuddles you gave us every day. Rest in peace, my love.” He set the montage Bette Midler’s recording of “The Rose.”
Geary made his daytime debut in the NBC soap Bright Promise, playing David Lockhart from 1971-2. In 1973, he played the villainous George Curtis on The Young and the Restless, and in 1978, he joined the cast of GH as Luke Spencer, the role that would make him a daytime legend. He played the role on and off through 2015. During his decades in Port Charles, Geary —with co-star Genie Francis — made Luke and Laura an iconic supercouple and took home a record eight Daytime Emmy Awards as Outstanding Lead Actor for his performance. From 1991-93, during a break from playing Luke, he took on a new GH character, that of Luke’s look-alike cousin, Bill Eckert.
When Geary retired from acting and left GH almost 11 years ago, he moved full-time to Amsterdam, where he lived with Gama. The longtime couple first got together in February 1995 and married in February 2019. “The 12th of February,” Gama posted this year on what would have been their seventh anniversary. “On this day in 2019, we were officially married in Amsterdam. After many years of Tony asking me, I finally said yes. Thank you for all the happiness, care, and love you showed us. Rest easy, my love.”
Since Geary’s passing on December 14, 2025, Gama has occasionally shared photos of his late husband on Instagram for his fans. Sometimes they are pictures from the actor’s time on GH, and other times, they are personal snaps taken by Gama himself. “I always used to think he was smiling at the camera,” he wrote in a post from March, “but now I like to think he was smiling at me. We miss him every day.”
