DAYS’s Linsey Godfrey ‘Excited’ to Explore Sarah-Rachel History (Exclusive)
Ever since Sarah was forced to relinquish a baby Rachel, whom she then believed was her daughter, Mickey, to Kristen, Linsey Godfrey (Sarah) had hoped she’d eventually get to explore her character’s connection to the little girl. She’s finally getting the chance thanks to the current Days of Our Lives plot that has young Rachel experiencing stomach issues ever since she witnessed Johnny pointing a gun at EJ and received medical treatment from Sarah.
Mother and Child Reunion
“I was so excited about it, because of the history,” Godfrey shares. “I think there are certain histories that get forgotten, even with Eric [Martsolf, Brady]. He was like, ‘Why are we doing all these stories with you?’ And I was like, ‘Because Sarah raised Rachel for the first year of her life.’ Rachel had cancer as a baby, and Sarah is the one that took her to get cancer treatments. She’s the one who breastfed this child. This was her baby for the first year of her life. So they do have this very interesting, very deep connection, and I love that we are revisiting that.”
Godfrey also likes that the story “is reminding people of the very complex relationship that Sarah and Kristen have, and everything that Kristen has done to Sarah. I was joking about it recently; I was like, ‘Even when Kristen did something horrible to Sarah, she was still taking care of her. Even though Kristen put Sarah on that desert island, she was still taking very good care of Sarah on that desert island.’ They were really tight. They were really close.
“There’s always been this weird dynamic between Sarah and Kristen,” the actress continues, “where they have so much love and respect for each other, because of the mutual thing that they had to deal with [their infant daughters being swapped] and go through that was horrible. And Brady and Sarah have a unique relationship too, because they’ve been family friends for years and years.”
Aside from all of that, Godfrey has also welcomed the plot turn for another reason: It’s given her the opportunity to work with Alice Halsey, who assumed the role of Rachel in April. “Alice is such an amazing little actor and she’s so smart,” says Godfrey. “Getting to hang out with her is awesome as well.”
As Rachel’s stomach issues persist and she continues to see Sarah, the little girl considers opening up to her about witnessing Johnny pointing a gun at EJ the night the senior DiMera was shot. “Sarah’s instrumental in helping Rachel feel better, but she doesn’t really help get down to the bottom of the truth as much,” notes Godfrey. “Sarah is more there as another adult in Rachel’s life that loves her and, obviously, as her doctor who cares a great deal for her. Sarah can feel that there’s something Rachel wants to get off her chest and that she’s desperately trying to do it, but Sarah doesn’t know what it is. And she certainly wouldn’t think it was something like [Johnny pointing a gun at EJ].”
Sarah assumes — and even tells Brady — that she believes Rachel’s symptoms are a reaction to John’s death. “The anxiety and all that,” says Godfrey, adding that, much to her delight, Sarah and Rachel begin bonding during their medical visits “as friends and as this weird family dynamic that they have.”
Godfrey reveals that the topic of Sarah and Rachel’s backstory will actually come up in conversation between the two of them “eventually.” In the interim, the actress says she’s simply been enjoying her “loads of scenes with Alice.”
