DAYS’s Brandon Beemer On ‘The Ultimate Payoff’ Of Shawn And Bo’s Reconciliation (Exclusive)
Sight For Sore Eyes: (From l.) Peter Reckell (Bo), Kristian Alfonso (Hope), Victoria Konefal (Ciara) and Brandon Beemer (Shawn) on the DAYS set.
Ever since Shawn shot his father in the head on that mountaintop in Greece, believing Bo was about to pull the trigger and put a bullet in Hope, actor Brandon Beemer has been waiting for a major Days of Our Lives moment: Bo awakening from his coma and Shawn apologizing to his dad. Over a year later, it finally happened — and, according to Beemer, it was everything he could have asked for as an actor.
“Shawn was ecstatic once he found out that his dad was going to live,” says Beemer, referencing the miracle drug that cured Bo of sepsis before he miraculously regained consciousness. “Finally he got to actually see his dad. I mean, he had not seen his dad since 2008, when Shawn left [Salem]. He hadn’t really seen his dad since then. That wasn’t his dad that he saw in Greece pointing a gun at his mom. So he hadn’t actually seen his dad in… what? Do the math. It’s been 17 years.”
Sorry State
Beemer had long been looking forward to the on-screen father-and-son reunion, followed by Shawn finally getting to issue an apology to Bo. “That was the first thing that Shawn had to get off of his chest,” nods Beemer. “He had to tell his dad that he was sorry for shooting him, because the guilt had been weighing on him. Shawn just wanted his dad’s forgiveness, because that’s truly where it had to come from. Shawn could only forgive himself when his dad forgave him.”
However, Bo took things a step further. “He demanded that Shawn forgive himself and stop beating himself up over what happened, because he did what anybody would have and should have done,” recounts Beemer. “It was either his mom’s life or this person that was not his dad, because that was not really his dad [on that mountaintop].”
Realizing the situation Shawn was confronted with upon seeing Hope in what seemed to be mortal danger, Bo totally understood his son’s decision and immediately forgave him. “It was a huge sigh of relief for Shawn,” Beemer notes. “It was like taking a thousand tons off of Shawn’s shoulders once his dad looked at him and said, ‘You did what anybody would have done. Stop beating yourself up for it. You need to stop, move on, and get back to your life.’ It gave Shawn his moment to heal. He could finally shake off what happened and move forward with his life.”
Beemer still recalls the intensity of playing those DAYS scenes opposite Peter Reckell (Bo). “Oh gosh, it was so much fun. It was tons of fun,” he raves. “It was great seeing Peter come back in, and he just delivered. Sometimes I forget how good he is. I was watching him and was like, ‘Whoa. I’ve never seen him this good. I’ve never seen him better.’ He was at the top of his game. It made me want to work even harder too.”
Working with Reckell and his DAYS mom, Kristian Alfonso (Hope), during this storyline arc was pure joy for Beemer. “They’re both great,” shares Beemer. “Kristian’s always performing and to have Peter back after so long… It was just great.”
As the TV son of the soap supercouple, Beemer was just as excited as fans to see Bo and Hope back together after so many years apart. “I love their reunion, that they’re together again,” Beemer enthuses. “It’s like the ultimate payoff. I’m definitely glad that it’s a happy ending. Finally, people can move on and can get some satisfaction.”
