When DAYS’s Christopher Sean (Paul) read Paul’s wedding vows to Sonny (Freddie Smith), he recounts, “I was proud and honored that the team would trust me with that kind of work. I had a four-page monologue. It took me four-and- a-half-minutes to get through one read of Paul’s vows. I worked it so many times, until it was in my bones and I understood every word of it. Every single word had a meaning. Once I could place a meaning to everything I was saying, and really understood where Paul was coming from, I knew I was ready.” When it came time to film the ceremony, the scene was shot in one take. “That was awesome,” smiles Sean. “To be there in front of the cast and crew, with all the producers watching, it was definitely a milestone moment in my career, thinking, ‘Wow, I really have to shoulder this and do it with grace.’ It was a nerve-wracking moment, but I remember looking on and actually seeing Deidre Hall [Marlena] and Kristian Alfonso [Hope] cry. Afterward, they came over and complimented my performance. They said it was honest, beautiful and real. There’s nothing more you can ask for than when your co-workers and the cameramen are crying. You know you’re doing something right. Freddie, Billy [Flynn, Chad] and Marci [Miller, Abigail] also had their own monologues, so the spotlight was on them, too. Each of them was phenomenal. I started to cry when Freddie read Sonny’s vows. So each of us was passing the torch. We needed to throw out some top-grade performances and I think we all did.”
Jessica Tuck (Cassandra, GH; ex-Megan, ONE LIFE TO LIVE) is having a blast connecting — and reconnecting — with members of the GH cast. “When I saw James DePaiva [David; ex-Max, OLTL] on the set, I was like, ‘What?!’ That was crazy. I didn’t know that he was there and he didn’t know that I was there, so it was really funny. We were love interests at one point on ONE LIFE, but we haven’t seen each other in, gosh, 20 years? It was fun to catch up, catch up on each other’s kids. Roger [Howarth, Franco; ex-Todd, OLTL] was coming in to ONE LIFE TO LIVE as I was leaving, so we knew of each other but had never really known each other, and I’ve had some nice conversations with him in the dressing room area. Finola [Hughes, Anna] and I knew each other when I was back on ONE LIFE TO LIVE just from seeing each other at different events, but we actually hadn’t spent that much time in the flesh together. My first day, I was in the makeup room and I saw her over my shoulder. I was like, ‘Finola!’ She came over and gave me a big hug and we immediately started talking about all sorts of things. She had been sort of a soap opera icon for me and she is abundantly approachable and down-to-earth and beautiful and smart. It’s really fun to be on the same set with her.”
For Camryn Grimes (Mariah, Y&R), the biggest bonus from her character’s romance with Devon is that she’s become close pals with his portrayer, Bryton James. “That’s so funny how that works sometimes, because I would’ve never gotten to know Bryton if we weren’t working together,” the actress points out. “There are people on the show who I’ve never had a scene with and who I don’t even see much of around the studio because we’re on different shooting schedules. So, when we are in the same story, you finally have a chance to become acquainted.” Which is what happened with the Devon and Mariah pairing. “I’m so happy that the writers went that route because getting to know Bryton has been so much fun,” Grimes smiles. “I swear to God that we never stop laughing. He really is this old soul, so we talk a lot about life and relationships. We go to lunch together and just hang out. When you’re friendly with someone off-screen, it always adds something special to what’s happening on-screen. The great thing about this show, there’s no behind-the-scenes drama, we all actually get along.”
When it comes to the highlights of his tenure as B&B’s Thomas, Pierson Fodé has many. “First, there were the big fight scenes with Thorsten [Kaye, Ridge]. He was such a gift in my life. Really, we didn’t get along at first. We were not friends [laughs]. It was the old bull/young bull situation. He was challenging me to make sure I wasn’t doing dumb s--t and making sure that I was on it. And, I was determined — whether he liked me or not, I was going to learn from him. For him to step up and be like, ‘Hey, this is a cool opportunity for you. Try it this way a little more. I know you want to go that way, but I guarantee you in the long run, this will play cooler.’ That was a really interesting insight, so working with Thorsten has been a huge highlight for me. And, a massive highlight for me is Courtney [Hope, Sally]. Bringing her on the show, it was like having your best friend come to work every day. We would sit down and talk and run lines and hang out and grab lunch. We had so much chemistry in those scenes that it was just fun. And, there was never a moment of trying to one-up each other. It was always a moment of, ‘I’m going to give to you whatever you need in this scene.’ Every single time. As an actor, having that safety with each other is so important. We got to really play and have fun.”
