In 1951, Love of Life debuted on CBS. The soap was created by the same man who brought Search for Tomorrow to life, Roy Winsor, who went on to create The Secret Storm. Love of Life ran until February 1, 1980. Among its original cast members was Peggy McCay (pictured), who played Vanessa Dale, the show's signature heroine. McCay would go on to play the matriarch of the Brady family, Caroline, on Days of Our Lives. Originally set in the fictional town of Barrowsville, the show switched locales to the town of Rosehill for the majority of the series's run. Outside of McCay, other notable alumni of its cast are the late John Aniston, best known for playing Victor Kiriakis on DAYS, and the late Christopher Reeve, best known as Superman in the film franchise.

In 1981, General Hospital's Alan Quartermaine (Stuart Damon) proposed to his mistress, Susan Moore (Gail Ramsey). A complicating factor, of course, was the fact that he was already married (to Monica).

In 1996, Days of Our Lives's Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney) and Austin Reed (Austin Peck) wed in Paris. Unfortunately for Sami, Austin did not marry her for love — he simply shared her desperation to reclaim custody of Will, Sami's son (who Austin thought was also his son at the time), who had been taken away by French social services. Austin and Sami tied the knot to bolster their chances of getting Will back.

In 2009 on Days of Our Lives, Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo) and Kate Roberts (Lauren Koslow) said, "I do." Their union began as a business arrangement, with Kate agreeing to marry Stefano in exchange for him ensuring that she didn't go to jail for her crimes against Daniel and Chloe. The ceremony took place at Chez Rouge, with the bride shedding tears (and not of happiness) as she said her vows. Lexie stood up for her father at the nuptials after initially refusing, and only because her young son, Theo, begged her to do so. Despite the rocky start, Kate's tenderness for Stefano grew over the course of their marriage.
