Marlena Reunited With the Devil on Days of Our Lives and Other Big Moments from September 20

In 2005, Colin Egglesfield (l., with Walt Willey as Jack Montgomery) debuted on All My Children as Joshua Madden, the secret son of Erica Kane and Jeff Martin, who had been raised by psycho ob/gyn Greg Madden. The role was originally played by Scott Kinworthy. The controversial character — controversial because his existence rewrote the landmark storyline in which Erica had an abortion back in 1972 — met his demise in 2009.

In 2011, Alexa Havins returned to All My Children as the ghost of Babe Carey, who appeared to her former husband, JR Chandler (Jacob Young), who was on a downward spiral of alcohol abuse and general self-destruction in the final days of the show, which went off the air two days later. Havins, who went on to play Lulu Spencer on General Hospital, originated the role of Babe in 2003 and exited in 2007; Amanda Baker took over the part and was playing Babe when the character died of the injuries she sustained in a tornado.

In 2019 on Bold and Beautiful, Wyatt Spencer (Darin Brooks) popped the question to Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope). At the beach house, Wyatt was looking at a picture of himself with Flo on his phone when Sally walked in. Sally reported that his mom, Quinn Forrester, was none too pleased about the fact that she and Wyatt were back together. Wyatt dismissed Quinn's concern, noting that it was none of his mom's business. They agreed that they wanted each other and began to kiss passionately but Sally pulled back, still a bit guarded. Wyatt asked her what he could to do reassure her that he truly wanted to be with her. Sally admitted that she didn't think she could handle another heartbreak and wanted a real commitment from Wyatt, who nodded that she deserved nothing less. Dropping to one knee, Wyatt intoned, "Marry me, Sally."

In 2021 on Days of Our Lives, Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) was horrified to realize that Doug Williams (Bill Hayes) was possessed by the devil — just as she herself had been back in 1994-95. During a therapy session in her office, the devil revealed his presence via Doug, telling Marlena, "Stop pretending that you don't remember me — hurts my feelings after everything that we shared; all those nights together at your penthouse, desecrating St. Luke's... Remember when John caught us red-handed?" Marlena murmured, "Oh, my God," to which Doug countered, "Not God, Marlena, but just as powerful, which you know better than anyone." "It can't be," Marlena stammered. The devil became enraged when she kept referring to him by the name Doug. Marlena was still in disbelief over what was happening, but that changed when the devil suddenly made the lights in the room go off and his eyes began to glow yellow! "Oh, my God," repeated Marlena as the reality of Satan's return struck her. "It's really you!"

In 2022, Johnny Wactor aired for the final time as Brando Corbin on General Hospital when the character passed away after being attacked by the serial killer known as The Hook (who would later be revealed to be Heather Webber). Wactor took the show's decision to kill off his character in stride and in his exit interview with Soap Opera Digest, he gave a special shout-out to viewers, saying, "Coming on to General Hospital, I didn’t know how diehard the fan base was — and also how critical they could be if they didn’t like you ... I’ve never been on a show that had such a large fan base. It was all new to me and it was a blessing. It made it fun to go to work and then be excited about seeing people react to the storylines you were in. That they actually cared was really cool. I’m grateful for the fans, for fans of General Hospital and Brando Corbin and of mine. They made my time on the show all the sweeter." Tragically, the actor was shot and killed in a 2024 robbery.
