Nina’s Wedding to Valentin on General Hospital Was Interrupted and More From October 7

In 1968, Ellen Holly made her One Life To Live debut as Carla Gray, who was an aspiring actress passing for white (she was born Clara). Holly’s character, and the storyline she anchored, was a critical jumping-off point for OLTL Creator Agnes Nixon when she first dreamed up the show. She told Soap Opera Digest in 2012, “The most important story to me was Clara/Carla, played by Ellen Holly, the African-American woman of light pigmentation who was an actress and could not get a job [until she passed for white].” This was an issue with which Holly had real-life experience; indeed, in 1968, she wrote an essay on racial bias in casting called “How Black Do You Have To Be?” that was published in The New York Times. Holly left the show in 1980 and returned in 1983; Carla came back to Llanview with a law degree and became an assistant district attorney. Holly exited OLTL again, and for the final time, in 1985.

In 2011, Debbi Morgan debuted as Y&R’s Harmony, formerly known as Yolanda, the birth mother of Bryton James's Devon. Her move to Y&R took place in the wake of the cancellation of All My Children, where Morgan had been playing the Daytime Emmy-winning role of Angie Baxter Hubbard. She had previously told TV Guide, "If I was ever to do another soap, Y&R would probably be the only one.” She exited the show in 2012 when the show made several cast cuts due to budget constraints.

In 2014, an amnesiac Jason Morgan (Billy Miller) — who, several years later, would be revealed to actually be Drew Cain — decided to call himself Jake on General Hospital. This was a significant choice, of course, as Jake is the name of Jason and Elizabeth's (Rebecca Herbst) son, who at the time was believed to be dead. (He returned very much alive in 2015.) The character went by "Jake" until the following year, when his true identity (or what appeared to be his true identity at the time) finally came to light.

In 2015, just when it seemed like he was a goner, Days of Our Lives's Bo (Peter Reckell) escaped his captors and declared, "I'm going home!" Unbeknownst to Bo, his dear friend Steve had every reason to believe that Bo had been killed and reported the devastating news to Bo's biological father, Victor Kiriakis. Bo did make it home, only to be tragically diagnosed with a brain tumor that seemed to kill him, until he was revived years down the line.

In 2019 on General Hospital, the wedding of Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) and Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) began. The bride had no idea just how dramatically things were about to go south. Before she entered the church, Nina's aunt, Liesl, doted on her and remarked that she wanted to take a photo of "mother and daughter," meaning Nina and Sasha Gilmore. Lulu Falconeri squirmed, because she had overheard Liesl and Sasha discussing the truth — that Sasha was not actually Nina's daughter! Lulu tried to speak with Nina privately, but Nina couldn't imagine a topic so important that it should delay her ceremony. Lulu ended up taking a seat and telling her date, Dustin, that she had chickened out of telling Nina because of how excited Charlotte (Lulu and Valentin's daughter) was about the wedding. Charlotte made her way down the aisle, followed by Sasha and Nina. Once at the altar, Nina beamed at Valentin as they began to exchange personal vows. An emotional Valentin called Nina the love of his life. Finally, Lulu couldn't take it anymore. She stood up and declared that Nina needed to hear the truth. Valentin tried to run interference, but Lulu wouldn't be deterred. As Nina lit into her for the interruption, Lulu blurted out that Sasha was not really Nina's daughter!
