In 1993, Mary Beth Evans — already a daytime superstar courtesy of her 1986-92 run as Kayla Brady Johnson on Days of Our Lives, a role she has since returned to — made her General Hospital debut as Katherine Bell. She originally went by the name Katherine Crawford and introduced herself to Scotty Baldwin (Kin Shriner) as an old friend of his late wife, Dominique Stanton Baldwin. She tried to con him into giving her money (a scheme she was executing with the help of her secret lover, Damian Smith). When Scott discovered Katherine had been playing him, he dumped her. Katherine went on to marry Ned Ashton, and had relationships with Mac Scorpio, Stefan Cassadine and Nikolas Cassadine before she was murdered by Helena Cassadine in 1999.

In 1994, GH’s Lucy Coe (Lynn Herring) and Kevin Collins (Jon Lindstrom) shared their first kiss. In the episode, Lucy fled a romantic dinner with Damian Smith and 'fessed up to Kevin that she had feelings for him, leading to the momentous smooch. Lucy and Kevin would go on to have an on-again, off-again love affair for decades.

The role had previously been played by Carrie Mitchum from 1987-1991, with Mitchum making additional guest appearances through 2001. Gareis was already familiar to daytime fans for her Young and Restless run as Grace Turner from 1997-99 (with guest appearances in 2002 and 2004).

In 2011, Y&R’s Sharon (Sharon Case, pictured with Michael Muhney, then-Adam Newman) was sentenced to 25 years in prison for Skye’s murder. When new evidence subsequently came to light, Sharon was granted a retrial, and the district attorney's office ultimately opted to drop the charges.
