Five Things That Happened On January 22 In Soap History

In 1986, Kale Browne (pictured with Anna Stuart as Donna Love) made his Another World debut as Michael Hudson. Michael was Donna's former lover, who fathered her twin girls, Marley and Victoria. Browne exited the show in 1992, but returned for a visit in 1993, then for a longer stay from 1995-98, when the character was killed off in a car accident. The actor subsequently joined the cast of One Life To Live as Sam Rappaport, then played Dr. Miles Berman on Days of Our Lives. In 1993, after his first AW run ended, he also appeared on All My Children as Denny Benton.

Days of Our Lives introduced Alison Sweeney as Sami Brady, the rapidly aged daughter of Roman Brady and Marlena Evans. Sami, along with her twin brother, Eric, were born on the show in 1984. Sweeney recalled what it was like to join the show to Soap Opera Digest in 2015, saying, "I was a huge fan, and I remember so clearly that my agent said something about playing Deidre Hall's [Marlena] daughter, and I really didn't know who that could be because the twins were like 8. And then I saw the character's name was Sami and I was like, 'Oh, my gosh. That's so crazy!' The audition scene was with Carrie and Austin. At the time, I had such a huge crush on Patrick Muldoon [ex-Austin]."

In 2010, General Hospital's Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson, l.) angrily and drunkenly confronted Liz and Nikolas (Tyler Christopher) about their affair, outraged that his fiancée and half brother had been carrying on behind his back. Before Lucky revealed that he knew about the affair, Liz told him he wasn't making any sense and needed help. He shot back, "You have helped me. You shocked me out of my dream world, my adolescent fantasies. You finally made me see reality. You don't love me, Elizabeth. Otherwise you wouldn't be screwing my brother behind my back."

In 2013, Karla Mosley made her Bold and Beautiful debut as Maya Avant, who would go on to become a groundbreaking character on the show with the reveal that Maya was a transgender woman. Mosley had previously appeared as Christina Moore on Guiding Light. Reflecting on her run in a 2023 interview with Soap Opera Digest, Mosley said that Maya "was truly a gift and a privilege to play. Brad [Bell, executive producer/head writer] did such a beautiful job with that story. It was insightful but not preachy or sensa-tional. We got so much positive feedback. I still hear from people about it."

In 2018, Samantha McCall (Kelly Monaco) and Drew Cain (Billy Miller) married on General Hospital. They had previously been married (albeit not legally, ultimately) when he was still believed to be Jason Morgan. After Drew and Sam both learned that he was actually Jason's twin and had been brainwashed to possess Jason's memories, and that their marriage was not legal as she was still married to Jason, Sam secured a divorce from Jason and legally wed Drew. However, she was unable to truly shake her feelings for Jason and the duo divorced in July of the same year.
