In 1996, in one of the most gruesome and unpopular storyline decisions in the show's history, Another World’s Frankie Frame Winthrop (Alice Barrett-Mitchell, pictured with Stephen Schnetzer as Cass Winthrop) was strangled to death by Fax Newman. A wife and mother to a young daughter, Frankie was beloved by fans, who decried the decision to kill her off. The actress told Digest in 1999, "Getting fired is hard. There's no getting around it. They can put any euphemism around it they want — for lack of story, storyline purposes — but what that boils down to is that someone has decided that you're not worth writing for anymore. That's painful." Barrett-Mitchell, who had played Frankie since 1989, came back to the show in its final year as a Frankie look-alike, Anne.
