Young and Restless Promotes Emmy-Winning Director to Co-Executive Producer
There has been a big change behind the scenes at Young and Restless, as Soap Opera Digest has learned that one of the soap’s directors, Sally McDonald, has been promoted to co-executive producer alongside Head Writer/Executive Producer Josh Griffith.
Moving on Up
McDonald got her start working at CBS Television City back in 1983 when she was hired as a typist, and was later promoted to work as a production supervisor on game shows like The $10,000 Pyramid, Card Sharks, and Win, Lose, or Draw.
She joined the staff at Y&R as a production supervisor in 1989, and then, in addition to her production duties, was hired as an associate director before becoming a director on the soap in 1996. As part of the directing team, McDonald has earned numerous Daytime Emmy nominations and has taken home the gold eight times over the years: in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2011, and 2019. McDonald was also part of the Y&R team that won the Directors Guild of America Award for in 1997.
Griffith, who began working at Y&R as a breakdown writer back in July 2006, was appointed the show’s co-executive producer and head writer in December 2018, sharing EP duties with Anthony Morina. When Morina exited in 2022, Griffith became sole EP. He had previously held that title on the soap from 2006-08. Griffith had also previously served as Y&R’s head writer from 2007-08 and 2012-13. Outside of Y&R, Griffith’s daytime roots run deep: His other soap credits include co-creating Sunset Beach with Robert Guza, Jr., and writing for Santa Barbara, One Life to Live, General Hospital, Days of Our Lives, and As the World Turns.
