What Did Patty Do to Summer on The Young and the Restless? The Attempted Murder Explained

Comments

Patty Williams’s (Stacy Haiduk) rap sheet is a lengthy one on The Young and the Restless, and one of the crimes she committed will never be forgotten by Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford). Back in 2009, while going by the alias Mary Jane Benson, Patty nearly killed Phyllis’s young daughter, Summer (Samantha Bailey). Phyllis threw this past crime in Patty’s face in the April 22 episode, and if you need a refresher on the plot, we’ve got you covered!

Having undergone plastic surgery — courtesy of Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) — Patty had returned to Genoa City in the guise of Mary Jane. She was determined to woo the man she considered to be her true love, Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman). Although she pretended to be friends with Phyllis, even babysitting for little Summer, Phyllis’s own interest in Jack landed her squarely on Mary Jane’s enemies list.

At the Restless Style office one day, Patty noted how happy Phyllis looked in a photo with her ex-husband, Nick (Joshua Morrow), and Phyllis reported they’d had good times, but the relationship was over. Summer wanted some cookies, but noticing that they contained peanuts, which her daughter was dangerously allergic to, Phyllis threw them in the trash.

Deciding that pushing Phyllis and Nick back together would be the best way to keep the redhead away from Jack, Patty hit upon a way to ensure that would happen. While Phyllis was distracted, Patty retrieved the cookies from the garbage and took a bite from one of them, deliberately getting crumbs all over her lips. “Mary Jane” then moved to leave, but asked Summer for a good-bye kiss first. The innocent little girl happily kissed “Mary Jane” right on the lips!

Later, Phyllis was distraught when she found her precious child passed out on the floor and frantically called 911. While the paramedics worked to revive Summer, Phyllis contacted the girl’s father, Nick, to alert him to the situation. At the time, Phyllis believed that Summer had eaten one of the cookies she’d thrown away. At the hospital, Summer fell into a coma, and Nick and Phyllis begged her to wake up. “Mary Jane” then dropped hints to the district attorney, Heather Stevens (Vail Bloom), that Phyllis purposefully exposed her daughter to peanuts to get Nick’s attention. Soon, a horrified Phyllis was placed under arrest!

Eventually, Phyllis and others, including Jack, began to suspect that it had been Mary Jane who had given Summer the cookie, but couldn’t figure out what the woman’s motive could possibly have been. Summer awoke from her coma, and tests showed that any brain damage from the experience was minimal and would likely resolve itself over time. Meanwhile, Patty committed more crimes while trying to elude the police, and Victor — who had been Patty’s co-conspirator, but was also Summer’s grandfather — put out a million dollar reward for her capture, not realizing she was hiding out in a potting shed on the Newman estate. Eventually, police chief Paul Williams (Doug Davidson) caught up to his sister and realized “Mary Jane’s” true identity. She confessed to causing Summer’s allergic reaction, but insisted she had never meant to severely harm the girl.
