The Young & the Restless Exclusive: Adam & Chelsea Face ‘Sticky’ Vegas Fallout, Says Mark Grossman
When Adam flew to Las Vegas with Nick (Joshua Morrow) on Young and Restless to help his brother track down Matt (Roger Howarth), he assured Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) that everything would be fine. However, she feared that his revisiting his past life as the card shark nicknamed Spider would lead to disaster — and when Chelsea arrived in Sin City in the April 15 episode, disaster struck. After a tense meeting with Riza (Tina Casciani), Chelsea and Adam came face to face with Matt, who claimed that Nick was dead. Even if they can rescue Nick and bring Matt to justice, what effect will all of this Sin City drama have on Adam’s relationship with Chelsea? Soap Opera Digest got the scoop from his portrayer, Mark Grossman.
When in Rome
Chelsea wasn’t really on board with Adam using his connections in Vegas to help Nick find Matt, worried that becoming Spider again — even if only briefly — would tempt his dark side back out of hiding. “It makes total sense that Chelsea would not want Adam to do this and risk the great place that they’re in,” the actor explains. “But at the end of the day, it’s like, duty calls, and Adam [tried] to reassure her that everything’s gonna be fine, even though maybe he’s a little worried as well.”
Knowing he was going to have to do some shady things in order to help Nick locate Matt, Adam was hoping to keep Chelsea far away from the action — but after he repeatedly ignored her calls, a worried Chelsea decided to take matters into her own hands and jet to Vegas. And now that she’s joined the fray, trouble is sure to follow. “Hey, what happens in Vegas should stay in Vegas, but I don’t think that’s gonna happen,” Grossman says with a laugh. “I don’t think anything is gonna stay in Vegas! So yeah, it’s just a tough rope to walk there.”
Still, after everything Adam and Chelsea have been through, the actor believes the couple’s relationship can withstand pretty much anything at this point. “I think Adam and Chelsea are strong enough — but it just gets real sticky.”
Lasting Effects
The Riza factor may prove to be one of those sticking points. Adam kissed his former partner-in-crime to get her to trust him. But if Chelsea finds out just how far he went to achieve his goals, will she see it as justified by the circumstances? Grossman hopes that Chelsea, a former con artist herself, will show him some grace. “We’ve all done shady things,” he declares. “We all have checkered pasts. So Chelsea, hopefully, can understand. Hopefully she sees that this is for the greater good, so to speak. He’s playing a role. It’s all a role.”
The problem with playing a role is that sometimes it can be hard to shake off, which could very well prove to be the case for Adam. “Yeah, I mean, who knows what will happen when he comes back to Genoa City,” Grossman muses. “It possibly could linger. Maybe that old Spider life sounds exciting, and there is temptation there.
“More will be revealed on that,” he continues. “Because there’s always the possibility that something can go off the rails with a character like Adam. The train can always fall off the tracks at any time!”
Chelsea and Adam have been relatively happy lately, so the couple is due for some drama, and Grossman is looking forward to some juicy scenes that he can play with Y&R co-star Egan. Though he adds that he doesn’t want to see the pair split up permanently. “Not for too long,” he winks. “Just some good fights in there and something to really bicker about. Something to chew on.”
