The Young and the Restless: Melody Thomas Scott Speaks Out on Nikki’s Medical Crisis
Nikki’s health has been faltering recently on The Young and the Restless as the show embarks on a new crisis for the character — and this week, Nikki goes from experiencing blinding headaches to discovering that her eyesight is deteriorating. Y&R star Melody Thomas Scott spoke about her dramatic new storyline in an interview with former Soap Opera Digest Editorial Director Stephanie Sloane, excerpted in her newsletter, Soap Steph’s Daytime Dish.
An Uncertain Future
With her marriage to Victor (Eric Braeden) on the rocks and their son, Nick (Joshua Morrow), currently battling a fentanyl addiction and nearly dying from an overdose, Nikki has a lot of stress in her life right now. “It’s easy for Nikki to attribute her headaches to these current events,” Scott noted. “Nikki has a full plate, so she initially brushes them off, thinking they are tension headaches. Unfortunately, Nikki’s condition will soon get progressively worse to the point where she will be forced to get medical attention.”
Over the years, Nikk’s health has been the subject of many different storylines, notably her ongoing battle with alcoholism and multiple sclerosis diagnosis. But, hinted Scott, “I’ve never played a character with this new diagnosis that Nikki will receive.” And when the actress got word about exactly what medical issue her character would be reckoning with, she said, “I spent more time than usual doing research and prepping” in order to make performance in the tale “as authentic as possible.”
Y&R Head Writer Josh Griffith previewed to Soap Opera Digest that Nikki’s diagnosis will test Nikki and Victor’s marriage like never before, but noted that it also has the potential to bring the couple back together. “It’s going to be a very frightening period for Nikki, and we’re going to be dying for that to be the catalyst for Victor’s turn back towards her,” he teased.
Scott enthused that she is looking forward to playing out the dramatic new storyline with Braeden, her longtime leading man, and seeing how it transforms the relationship between Nikki and Victor. “As much as Eric and I enjoy the romantic moments,” she mused, “we also savor the opportunity to play the not-so-happy times in the marriage.”
