The Young and the Restless: Is Matt Clark Really Leaving?
Matt Clark (Roger Howarth) has announced his intention to leave Genoa City on Young and Restless, but is his decision a genuine attempt to spare the people he’s hurt any more pain, or just part of some new scheme? Plus, even as Matt made plans to skip town in the July 20 episode, not everyone wanted him to go.
Can Matt Start a New Life Somewhere Else?
At the new Shadow Room bar in Genoa City, Matt informed Nick (Joshua Morrow), Sharon (Sharon Case), Noah (Lucas Adams), and Sienna (Tamara Braun) that he would give them all what they wanted and leave town. Even though he no longer felt like the man who victimized them for years, he understood they would always see him as a monster.
During the mid-‘90s and early ‘00s, Matt terrorized Sharon and Nick on Y&R, but was presumed dead in 2001. However, the villain resurfaced decades later in October 2025, very much alive and going by the name of Mitch Bacall. He expanded his reign of terror to include Nick and Sharon’s son, Noah, who was having an affair with Matt’s wife, Sienna.
After Matt attempted to kill Sharon, Nick, and Noah in an explosion, Sienna attacked the villain and believed she’d killed him during the struggle. But the blow on the head instead gave Matt amnesia, and even after his memories returned, he claimed to no longer feel those violent urges and insisted he was a changed man — Something everyone had a hard time believing.
As Matt moved to exit the bar, Nick wondered where he would go. Matt explained he wasn’t sure, but hoped to move somewhere new to build a life and make someone happy. He did anticipate that Victor (Eric Braeden) could prove an obstacle, but Nick promised to take care of his father.
Matt then checked in with Sienna, who agreed that his leaving would be best for everyone. He apologized to everyone for the pain and hurt he’d caused, then wished Noah and Sienna good luck with their bar before exiting. Noah was relieved to see the last of Matt, but Nick worried this was all too easy and wanted to make sure the villain was gone for good.
Will Someone Stop Matt From Leaving?
Matt’s next stop was the Newman Ranch, where he informed Victor that he had to leave town, explaining that no one would give him a break and the plan to pump Cane for information was doomed to fail. Victor coldly announced that he was the only one who could break their deal, and threatened that if Matt backed out, he’d see to it that he wound up in prison… or worse.
Matt insisted that he couldn’t live in this town, but Victor wasn’t willing to let his wild card go and warned Matt not to let him down. After Matt left, Nick arrived, and after discussing the situation with Matt, Victor asked his son how he would handle the villain.
Heading to the GCAC, Matt took a seat at the bar and called Phyllis (Michelle Stafford), asking her to meet him there. She headed downstairs and was stunned when he announced his plans to leave town, declaring, “I’m not letting you go.”
