The Young and the Restless Exclusive: Cane and Lily’s Romantic ‘Turning Point’ Sparks New Drama
Things are heating up for Cane (Billy Flynn) and Lily (Christel Khalil) on The Young and the Restless, as evidenced by the steamy kiss they shared on the May 27 episode — one that left both Mr. Ashby and the former Mrs. Ashby all hot and bothered! Y&R Head Writer Josh Griffith gave Soap Opera Digest the inside scoop on the state of Cane and Lily and what to expect from their next chapter.
Don’t Stop Believin’
Since Flynn joined the cast last summer as a recast for Lily’s former hubby, “Cane has never faltered in his desire to win back her trust and her love,” says Griffith. “As she’s pushed him away in the past, he’s grown angry about it, and it’s been volatile, but he’s never lost that desire. The turning point here is that Lily is now starting to slowly let go of her armor and the defenses that she’s put up because there’s been so many lies in the past.”
Cane stepping up as a bone marrow donor in an effort to save the life of her biological father, Malcolm (Shemar Moore), who has been battling aplastic anemia, gave Lily a fresh wave of faith in the man she loved enough to marry twice, but who has broken her heart on multiple occasions. His betrayals and deceptions, Griffith notes, “are still a sensitive subject for her.” Still, “She wants to believe that this is the Cane she fell in love with — and she’s slowly starting to believe that maybe that man is coming back.”
Of course, not everyone in Lily’s life is as quick to give Cane the benefit of the doubt — but to hear Griffith tell it, Lily’s faith in Cane is restored at least enough for her to wave that away. He says, “She’s being told by family members, ‘Well, he only saved Malcolm so that you would change your opinion of him.’ But she doesn’t believe that’s true. She thinks this is something that he did because it was the right thing to do, and that helps her love him for doing it.”
There is, however, some lingering internal friction in Lily, who remains at least somewhat afraid to let her guard down fully lest Cane hurt her again. “The flip side of her believing that he did what he did for the right reasons is that it keeps in her mind the possibility that, ‘Okay, he did the right thing there, but can I trust him with my heart?’ That question is still there.”
Is there a world in which Cane could ever resolve that question to Lily’s satisfaction? “I hope so,” winks Griffith.
Cane and Lily fans should be heartened to hear how Griffith answers another million-dollar question: Does he see Cane and Lily as a destiny duo? “I do,” he declares. “Who knows how hard it’s going to be to finally get there — completely, totally — but I really want them to be.”
As for what the saga of Cane and Lily will look like moving forward, the writer reveals that heading into June, “There is a surprising turn of events that puts a powerful piece of information in Billy’s [Jason Thompson] hands that will throw Cane and Lily together to try to stop Billy from going after something he wants.”
